County Impact Statements - Drew County
Drew County 4-H Members Are "Learning By Doing"
Since it began early in the 20th century, 4-H has been a part of the Drew
County community. Youth participating in out-of-school 4-H clubs have
self-selected the projects or subject areas they will pursue, through hands-on,
learning by doing.
For over two decades 4-H has emphasized that along with subject matter
knowledge, youth should also acquire "life skills." Life skills are highly
transferable knowledge, skills and abilities, useful throughout life. The Drew
County 4-H program places a major emphasis on youth developing life skills.
4-H’ers participate in county-wide activities such as the Annual Recognition
Banquet, Conservation Day, Kite Day, Strawberry Monday, Pullet Chain, and the
Drew County Fair. Drew County youth also participate in state camps,
Citizenship-Washington Focus, the Ross Photography Contest, Shooting Sports, the
District and State 4-H Horse Shows, and the District and State Fairs. These
activities teach 4- H members to give back to their communities, to express
themselves, to win and lose gracefully, to talk in front of crowds, and more.
Through school enrichment programs, youth learn nature and the environment,
careers, money management, and practical skills such as sewing.
Drew County 4-H members also learn the importance of giving back to their
community through community service projects. Some of the projects the 4-H’ers
have been involved in include the Relay For Life cancer benefit, ringing
Salvation Army bells, and the H.U.G.S. project.

Impacts
- The Drew County 4-H program involves youth in community and special
interest clubs.
- During the 2000-2001 school years, 26 school enrichment programs were
conducted, reaching 310 students and teachers.
- Drew County 4-H members are involved in community service, from ringing
bells during the Christmas season to raising money and awareness for cancer
research during Relay For Life.
