Banner Basics
What is Banner? According to SCT, the company that makes the Banner products,
it is: “the only fully integrated, Oracle-based, Internet-native technology
solution available today for the higher education community. Banner is the
market-leading suite of software applications for student information,
advancement, human resources, financial aid, faculty and advisors, finance, and
more.” So, what does that mean? Banner is an integrated system that handles all
of our accounting, payroll, reporting and other financial operations.
A Banner username and password are required to access the system. Banner user
requests should be submitted to Financial Services for approval and are
forwarded to Information Technology to be established. For most users, Banner is
internet based, which means you access it through your web browser. A browser
plug-in call JInitiator is also required but it has already been installed on
most Extension computers. If your computer was not set up, you can request a CD
from Susan James
with the most recent installation file or follow the instructions available
here.
Your Banner password must be changed after you login for the first time and
every six months after that. Instructions for changing your password are
available here.
When you password expires, an email is automatically generated to let you know
it is time to update your password. When your password has expired, the only
form you can access once you have logged in is the Oracle Password Change Form (GUAPSWD).
Any other form selected will give you a “user not authorized” message on the
screen.
Once you have gotten by all of these hurdles, you are ready to actually do
something in Banner. If you are new to Banner it probably will seem big and
imposing the first few times you login because, well, it’s big and imposing.
Banner is meant to handle a lot of work for a lot of purposes. However, most of
the time you are only there for one specific reason – a requisition or a time
sheet most likely. Instructions are available
here to help you navigate
around and understand some of the common terminology and functions. Just
concentrate on the areas where you need to work and before long you will be a
Banner pro.
