Banner Navigation Tips

Banner screens are made up of forms that are online documents where you can enter and look up information in the Banner database. There are several ways to navigate through Banner including the menu bar, an iconic toolbar and keystrokes.

The menu bar is located at the top of every Banner form and includes seven pull-down menus.

  • File Menu
  • Edit Menu
  • Block Menu
  • Field Menu
  • Record Menu
  • Query Menu
  • Help Menu
  • Window

To access an option in the menu bar, use the mouse to click on the desired pull-down menu name and then click on the desired menu item.

The toolbar is a set of iconic buttons that perform many common functions in Banner.

Explanation of toolbar buttons:

  • Save/Commit – Saves all changes entered since the last time you saved
  • Rollback – Clears all information and returns you to the first enterable field on the screen
  • Select – Used from a query form, returns the selected data to the fields on the calling form
  • Insert Record – Inserts a blank record into the list of existing records
  • Delete Record – Removes all information for the current record
  • Enter Query – Put the form into query mode so you can search for an item
  • Execute Query – Searches the database and displays the records that match your search criteria
  • Cancel Query – Cancels the query and takes the form out of query mode
  • Previous Record – Moves to the previous record in the list of existing records
  • Next Record - Moves to the next record in the list of existing records
  • Previous Block – Moves back one block in the series of blocks that make up a form
  • Next Block - Moves to the next in the series of blocks that make up a form
  • Print Screen – Prints the current window
  • Exit – Exits the current form or window. From the main menu, exits Banner.

One final method of navigation is through keystrokes. Many of the functions listed above can be accessed through the seven pull-down menus or through keystrokes. Some of the most common keystroke commands are:

  • Ctrl+Page Up (Press the Ctrl and Page Up keys together) – equivalent to Previous Block
  • Ctrl+Page Down – Next Block
  • F7 – Enter Query
  • F8 – Execute Query
  • F6 – Insert Record
  • Shift+F6 – Delete Record
  • F4 – Duplicate Record (copies all fields from the previous record)
  • Shift+DownArrow – Next Record

Other navigational keystrokes can be found by clicking on the Help menu, then clicking on Show Keys.

Elements of a Form

A Form is often composed of a series of Blocks that are linked together. Buttons are used to perform an action or respond to Banner. For example the flashlight button can be used to lookup the possible values that can be entered in a field. Fields are the areas on a form where you can enter, change or query information. A record is a set of related fields. The Autohint area displays important information, including error messages, about the actions you are trying to perform. For example, if you forgot to enter information in a required field, the autohint area would display a message that reads “Field must be entered”.

Accessing a Form

A Form can be accessed, or called, one of four ways. The most convenient method is to locate the form in your Personal Menu and using the mouse to click on the form name. If the form you need is not in the personal menu, you must use one of the following options.

  • Type the form name in the Direct Access box on the main menu.
  • Select the File menu, then on Direct Access. Enter the form name in the dialog box
  • Locate the form in the Products Menu (this can be difficult if you are unfamiliar with the organization of Banner functions)
