Associate VP’s Internal Innovative Grants Program
Wanting to increase your chances of securing extramural funding? Looking for
money to support an innovative new project? Needing to establish a track record
of receiving and successfully administrating grant programs? If that is the
case, then the Associate Vice President’s Innovative Grants Program is for you.
The Associate Vice President for Agriculture—Extension will fund a
competitive internal grants program. The program will support innovative
projects, as well as pilot projects, whose results will be used as the basis for
future proposals to outside funding sources. These awards will be given
annually, providing availability of funding, to help Extension agents and
specialists establish and maintain experience with securing and managing
sponsored projects and to help them be more competitive for external funding.
Funding agencies often prefer to support principal investigators (P.I.s) with a
proven track record. This internal competition will allow Extension employees to
establish such a record if they do not currently have one and help them be more
competitive in seeking outside funding.
For FY09, at least $25,000 has been made available to fund these competitive
projects. These funds have been dedicated to this effort from the indirect cost
recovery account of the Associate Vice President—Extension. The maximum award
for an individual P.I. will be $5,000/year. For projects involving multiple Co-P.I.s,
the maximum award will be $7,500/year. Each will allow proposals to be submitted
for a period of up to three years (up to $15,000 total for the three years for
individual P.I.s and $22,500 total for multiple Co-P.I. projects). Funding for
subsequent years will be contingent upon satisfactory progress toward goals.
There is no limit to the number of applications that can be submitted from any
one individual/county/section/department/unit. Only individuals with at least a
partial Extension appointment are eligible to serve as P.I.s. Since this is an
internal grant program, no indirects will be charged on the grants. Awards will
have the possibility of a one-time 6-month no-cost extension.
For FY09, proposals in any subject area in which Extension works will be
acceptable. There will not be priority program areas selected this year.
Proposals submitted should be truly innovative projects in support of
Extension’s mission rather than a request for funding for travel to national
professional meetings, traditional in-service training and general equipment
items. Such items are allowable if they are an integral part of the program and
in support of the project’s goals and objectives. Projects must be Extension or
applied research, rather than pure research.
There will be a two-step review process. Proposals will be reviewed for
technical compliance internally and only those complying with these requirements
will be considered in the following review. Proposals will be reviewed for merit
by an outside panel composed of former Extension employees, those in
organizations closely affiliated with Extension, and Extension employees from
other states, who have had grants experience during their careers.
