Cow Herd Performance Testing Program in Arkansas
The Arkansas Cow Herd Performance Testing Program under the leadership of the Cooperative Extension Service was initiated and developed during the mid 1950
's. The program uses the guidelines recommended by the Beef Improvement Federation.Cow herd performance testing is the basic cornerstone for improving performance in beef cattle operations. By utilizing the performance data to select superior replacement females and to cull poor producing cows, the performance of the herd should increase over the years. Performance testing involves the collection of measurements on production traits within the herd such as rate of gain, 205-day weaning weights, muscle composition, frame or skeletal size and cow efficiency.
Cow herds that have been on the program for several years have seen 205-day adjusted weaning weights improve substantially each year. The program also will help weed out inefficient cows that are weaning a low percentage of their body weight. The program is designed to compare cattle within a herd not between herds. Different herds have different environments, breeding programs, calving seasons and management schemes.
The Calf Crop Record Worksheet, CES 410 (Rev. 4/99) is used to record the raw data in the field. All the information needed for the computer program will come from this form.
New herds enrolled in the program will be assigned a herd number. Requests for new herd numbers or questions about old herd numbers should be addressed

The Cow Herd Performance Testing Program is a valuable management tool and allows ranchers to evaluate the economic performance of their herds, set goals and give direction to their breeding program.
This product was developed by the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.
The purpose of the product is to provide assistance to Extension clientele that is consistent with the objectives set forth by the Cooperative Extension Service. Resale of this product or use of it for purposes other than its intended use is strictly prohibited. Information put forth by this product should be used in close consultation with the appropriate Cooperative Extension professional.
The Cooperative Extension Service is not liable for damages resulting from recommendations made by this product.

You can receive your program one of two ways. You may download it from the UAEX Web Site or install it from the program CD. Remember, this is strictly a WINDOWS program. Cow Herd for Windows will not run from DOS, nor can it run on a computer that does not have Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed with at least 16MB RAM, a 200 MHZ or faster processor, and at least 16 MB free on the hard drive. Each herd's data is stored on a separate floppy disk, which is run from the A Drive.
The user's guide (this document) is included with the program and is stored in the C:\WINHERD directory in two formats: COWHERD_GUIDE.WPD (WordPerfect format) which is usable by most word processors and COWHERD_GUIDE.PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format) which is independent of a word processor. If you do not have the software to read Acrobat files (PDF formats), the installation software is on the program CD in the Acrobat directory.
Installing from the web site. [County and Research offices only]
Each county will be mailed a CD for the program, or you can download it from the Intranet. Connect to the Intranet, then proceed to the File Area. Move to the Computer, Software section and download the Cow Herd Performance Program file [COWHERD.EXE] and save it to your C:\DATA directory. All county and research offices should have a C:\DATA directory. Open Windows Explorer (Start, Programs, Window Explorer) and move to the C:\DATA directory where you will find the COWHERD.EXE file. Double-click the file to run it. It will unzip the program files into the C:\DATA\TMP directory file. Click on OK to close the Success window, then Close to end the Unzip program.
Now click on the C:\DATA\TMP directory and find the SETUP.EXE program. Double-click on SETUP.EXE to install Cow Herd into the Animal Science program group. It should install Cow Herd with an icon in the C:\WINHERD directory, under the Animal Science program group. One the program is installed, click once on the C:\DATA\TMP directory and delete it by pressing the delete key on your keyboard.
Installing the program from CD.
Your computer program is installed by inserting the program CD and going to START, PROGRAM, WINDOWS, and clicking on the Drive letter for the CD. Run the program--SETUP.EXE. It should install Cow Herd in the C:\WINHERD directory with an icon under the Animal Science program group. Shortcuts to both versions of the user's guide are also under the Animal Science group.
Once you have successfully installed the program, you can access it from the Start Menu using the following steps--
[1] Select Start, [2] Select Programs, [3] Select Animal Science, and [4] Select UACES Cow Herd Performance.

Calf Crop Record Work Sheet Input
The calf crop record worksheet should be sent to the producer several weeks before the calves are weighed. The producer should fill in the first nine (9) columns of information ahead of time. This will result in fewer mistakes on information and save considerable time on weigh days.
The information needed on the work sheet : See
Demonstration Data.Calf Number. The calf should be identified at or near the time of birth. It is helpful to use at least two methods of identification so the calf can be positively identified. Dual ear tags, tattoos, fire or freeze brands may be utilized. The computer will accept a maximum of six spaces for calf number.1.

Calf Sex. Use codes from the back of the work sheet (B, Bull; H, Heifer; and S, Steer).3.
Calf Birth Date. Stress accuracy in recording birth dates.4.
Calf Birth Weight. Record actual birth weights if available. The program will enter birth weights according to BIF breed standards if actual weights are not available.5.
Sire Number. When sire numbers are included, sire summaries will be generated. This is not possible in commercial herds using multiple sire breeding. Sire identification is limited to six spaces.6. Dam Number. Cows need to be positively identified and matched to their calf. Use at least two methods to identify the dam. Dam identification is limited to six spaces.
7. Dam Birth Date. Dam age must be known in order to utilize adjustment factors for cow
's age. Cows may be mouthed to determine approximate age.8. Dam Last Calving Date. If the previous years
' calving records are available, they can be used to calculate the dam's calving interval.9. Calf Management Code (MC). The following codes are also on the back of the work sheet.

10. Calf Weaning Weight. This is the most important piece of information gathered on the herd. Weigh the calf on an accurate set of scales.
11. Calf Hip Height. This measurement is taken over the point of the hips to determine skeletal or frame size.
12. Calf Muscle Code. This measurement is an indication of muscle thickness and composition. The following codes are also on the back of the work sheet.

13. Dam Weight at Weaning. Allows the producer to know the weight of his cows and is used to calculate the percentage of her body weight versus her calf's body weight at weaning.
14. Dam Body Condition Score. Body condition scores are use to suggest the relative fatness or body composition of the cow. This score determines the body condition of each individual cow at weaning time or 100 days prior to calving. Thin cows should be grouped for extra supplementation. Select the appropriate code which is also on the back of the work sheet.

15. Dam Hip Height. This measurement is taken over the point of the hips and is used to determine the frame and skeletal size of each cow.
Make a New Data Disk
Individual herds are kept on separate data disks. Each disk can hold about 10000 records which would equal data for
[1] 500 calves for approximately 18 years,
[2] 1000 calves for approximately 9 years, or
[3] 1500 calves for approximately 6 years.
To use this feature, place a formatted data disk in the A drive and press this option. You will be given the opportunity to input the producer's information, check data flags for calculations and/or entries, breed information, and set the weaning date.
For data security, you should copy your data onto a new disk every year, plus keep a current backup. A backup disk is a full copy of your data disk to prevent data loss. Your software can always be replaced, but once data is lost, it is gone. See Backup Data Disk.
Display Producer Information
This will allow you to correct any producer information, data flags, or the weaning date. All the records in the current file will be recalculated to reflect the updated information.
Changing the weaning date here changes the date in all the current records. Selecting the breed sets the default birth weights for your calves.
Setting the data flags( i.e. whether or not you have the "Date of Last Calving"), determines which fields the Calf Data Entry program expects you to fill in. Not checking a field means it will be skipped over when entering calf information. It also determines whether or not certain calculations, such as Cow Frame Score, are attempted.
NOTE: After archiving your current data, the record date and weaning date need to be corrected for the next set of cattle. This screen "Producer Information Screen" appears after you've archived.
Edit/Update Calf Crop Data
This is the data entry screen for calf crop information. The fields calf frame score and cow frame score are calculated if respective hip heights are available.
If you have indicated that you do not have information for a certain field, such as calf birth weight, that field will be skipped. Since birth weight is essential for many calculations, a default weight, based on the breed and sex of the calf, will be inserted.

| Finished | deletes all marked records and closed the open databases. Remember, the floppy disk drive is the slowest drive on your computer. It may be still writing when this window closes. |
Do not remove your data disk from the drive until after you are returned to the main menu and the floppy drive light is off.

Browse Screen
The Browse screen allows you to view several fields of several records all at once. Notices the bars located to the right and at the bottom of the screen. Use those bars to move the active up and down or left to right. Also, if the current order of the fields is not to your liking, you can change them by clicking the field name at the top of the screen, for instance Dam, and holding down the left mouse button. Drag the field name to the left or right to change the display order. All of the columns can be moved this way. The next time you use the browse screen, it will return to its proper order.
Pressing the Escape [Esc] button will return you to the Calf-Data entry screen.
Print Full List -- This is a printout of the records as they were entered from the original calf crop record work sheet. This sheet is checked against the original to make certain calf information was correctly entered.

Archive
Archiving builds the history file which is used in performing the MPPA calculations. This screen allows you to either [1] Move Current Records to Archive - placing the records in the current data file in the archive, or [2] Edit Archive Records - allows you to edit existing records in the history file.
Move Current Records to Archive
This screen gives you the option of keeping the dam information from the current file and moving that information forward for the next crop year. This saves data entry as you will only have to match the dam with their new calf. After choosing this option, the program will display the "Producer Information Screen", where you will need to update the records date and the weaning date.
Edit Archive Records
Edit records which have been moved out of the current file and into the Archive. Use either the individual calf screen or the browse screen option to view and edit your archived records.
Browse Archive Records
Press the Escape [ESC] to close this window after you've completed your changes.
Cow Herd Performance Test
This selection prints the Cow Herd Performance reports and summary. Unlike the older versions of this program, you can run this option as often as you need. All four parts of the report, plus the summary, will be sent to the printer you select from the printer box. Two copies of the summary sheet will be printed. One copy should be sent to Bill Wallace at the state office at the end of the weaning season.
Also note that each separate report begins with a new numbering systems, for example the fifth page of the first report will be numbered REPORT 1/ 5.
Cow-Calf Data Summarized by Sex of Calf
This is a printout of the original calf records. The records have been grouped by sex of calf (bulls, heifers, and steers) and calves have been listed in order (high to low) according to their adjusted 205-day weight. All the information in this section is unadjusted cow-calf information.
Important items to check are:
These are the birth weights reported on the calf crop work sheet. If no birth weights were reported, then breed standard or BIF standard birth weights are used. For breeders reporting actual birth weights, averages will be calculated. Birth weights should be recorded within twenty-four (24) hours of birth. Birth weights taken past 24 hours will not be an accurate measure of actual birth weight. Birth weight is one of the leading factors in calving difficulties. Breeders should monitor birth weights in the herd. High birth weights may be causing difficulties in the herd, and lower birth weight sires may need to be used. Breeders should also use birth weights as a guide in marketing animals B advising prospective buyers on bulls that may or may not work in a herd because of birth weight.Birth Weights (BWT):
Dam Age: On this sheet the dam age has been calculated and printed in years from her birth date.
Management Code (MGT Code): The management code describes how the calf was raised. Calves with management codes of 3 through 8 will not have ratios calculated and their records will not be included in herd averages. Management codes 3 - 8 indicate the calf was raised under conditions that would significantly affect its actual and adjusted weaning weight.
Actual Weaning Weights (ACT WEAN WT): These are actual weights reported on the work sheet. These weights should be checked when selecting replacement animals This is especially important with heifers that have high 205-day weights or weight ratios but are very young (born late in the calving season) and have low actual weaning weights. It may be difficult for these heifers to reach a target weight by breeding time.

Performance Records Summarized by Sex of Calf
This section of the performance records package contains all adjusted weaning weight records on the herd divided by sex. The two primary adjustments made to the calf records are: 1) calf records are adjusted to a standard 205-day weaning age, and, 2) calf records are adjusted for the age of the dam that produced the calf.
Items to check are:
This is the age of the calf on the day the calf was weighed. Calves should be weighed in management groups and be weighed when they are between 160 and 250 days of age. Calves weighed outside this age range will not have ratios calculated or have their records included in averages.Age in Days:
Average Daily Gain (ADG): ADG is the calf's gain from birth to weaning. ADG is used to calculate the adjusted 205-day weight.
205-Day Adjusted Weight (205-Day ADJ WT): Calves are ranked from high to low according to their adjusted weight. In the selection of replacement heifers, the top half of the heifer crop should be considered as the primary group to select potential replacements. The top half of the heifer crop can be considered as those heifers having an adjusted weight near the heifer average or higher or having a weight ratio of 100 +/- 2 or higher. These calves should also be visually evaluated and selected for other traits of importance such as: 1) structural correctness, 2) desirable muscling, 3) desirable frame size, 4) suitable disposition, 5) breed character, and 6) other traits of interest to the breeder. If a few extra heifers are needed, they can be selected from those just under the herd average for weaning weight or having a ratio of 95 +/- 2 to 100 +/- 2. Heifers below this level of performance should not be considered as potential replacements.
In purebred operations, bull calves should also be selected on performance and then be visually evaluated. For bull calves, the top fourth or third of the calves should be considered first. These would be followed by the next fourth or third. The total number of bulls selected will depend on the size of breeders> market for those bulls. On work sets of records, these groups will be marked off and numbered. Group 1 being the top group, Group 2 being the middle performers, and Group 3 being the tail end of the calf crop. Group 3 can generally be considered culls.
The 205-Day Weights and Weight Ratios should also be related to dams for the identification and culling of low producing cows. Cows producing calves with the lowest adjusted weaning weights or weight ratios (89 or less) should be considered potential culls. For many herds, culling on performance may be limited to a few head each year. When culling, cull the lowest performing cows and work up the list.
Weight ratios are calculated by dividing a calf's adjusted weight by its group average and multiplying by 100. A 600 pound calf out of a group of bulls averaging 550 pounds would have a ratio of 109. A calf at the herd average would have a ratio of 100. The 600 pound bull would be nine percentage points above the herd average. Weight ratios convey the same information as adjusted weights but also describe the rank of the calf in the calf crop.Adjusted 205-Day Weight Ratio (ADJ 205 WEIGHT RATIO):
Adjusted Hip Height (ADJ HIP HEIGHT): Actual hip heights are adjusted to 205 days and are used to describe the skeletal makeup of the calf. The use of a hip height and frame score chart will relate a hip height to a frame score.
Hip Height Ratio (HIP HT RATIO): Hip height ratios convey the same information as weight ratios. One hundred is the average and values over 100 are calves with more frame size.
Calf Frame Size: Calf frame size is calculated by formula using the actual hip height of the calf and days of age when measured. Desirable frame size would be in the range of 4 to 7 (medium, 4-5; large 6-7). Calves with frames smaller or larger than 4 to 7 will not fit industry standards for carcass weight when finished. Culling the extremes and selecting for moderate frame size is the direction the industry in currently headed.
Muscle Score: Muscle score is a visual evaluation of the amount of natural thickness and muscling a calf is carrying. These scores are used to help identify the more heavily muscled calves for retention in the herd or for use as sires. These values can also be used to identify dams and sires that are producing lighter muscled or off-type calves.
Calf Wt/Cow Wt: Calf weight divided by cow weight determines the percent of her body weight that a cow weans. Ideally a cow should wean close to 50 percent of her body weight. In many herds, some of the very large cows (1350 to 1400 lbs and heavier) are not weaning the heaviest calves. These cows may be weaning only 30 to 40 percent of their body weight. These cows that are weaning a low percentage of their body weight should be candidates for culling.

Performance Records Summarized By Sire
When individual sires are identified on the calf crop work sheets, sire summary sheets are generated for each sire. The sire summary sheet is set up in the same manner as the performance record pages. Performance records and other records should be compared between sires to determine which sires are doing the most for the herd. In some herds there may be sizeable differences between sires. In other herds differences may be small. All beef producers should be constantly looking for a new sire or new sires that will improve the herd. One problem that is often encountered on sire summaries is small numbers of calves per sire. Sires with only one, two or three calves are difficult to evaluate on the performance of their calves. Was he bred to a top cow, a cull cow, an average cow; was the calf sick; did the calf get special treatment, etc.? When a sire has five to ten or more calves in a group, then it becomes easier to evaluate whether he will make a contribution to the herd.
Each Sire's report is on a separate sheet of paper for ease of comparison.
