| 1. | Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and click on Backup. The Backup Utility Wizard starts by default, unless it is disabled. | |
| 2. | Don’t go to Next here but click the Advanced Mode button in the Backup Utility Wizard. | |
| 3. | Click the Backup tab at the top, and then, on the Job menu, click New. | |
| 4. | Specify the files and folders you want to back up by selecting the check box to the left of a file or folder in Click to select the check box for any drive, folder, or file that you want to back up. Be conservative here at first by just backing up My Documents. Just backup the folders that contain your necessary Word, Power Point and slides or picture files. Blue Ribbon data files should already be backed up using Beverly’s directions on how to do that. Your Access file for mailing list called Names.mdb should be in the My Documents folder. | |
| 5. | In Backup destination, do one of the following: | |
| - | Click File if you want to back up files and folders to a file. This is selected by default. | |
| 6. | In Backup media or file name, do the following: | |
| - | You can click on the Browse button to change the backup file name (Leave the .bkf extension on your file name) and change where you put it. I browsed and put my backup file in a folder I created on my Desktop called Backups. You may want to put it in your shared folders so you can move it over to other computers on the network as another backup precaution. However, remember that everyone on the network can access files in your Shared folder. Eventually you will want to write the backup file to two CD’s and take one CD home in case of catastrophes like fire or flood. I recommend that you save backup files in at least 4 different places. On your computer. On another computer in the office. On a CD kept in the office. On a CD taken out of the office. You might consider a free website like Xdrive.com that allows you to upload your backups to the internet. | |
| 7. | You can look at but shouldn’t have to change backup options, such as the backup type and the log file type if you click on the Tools menu, and then click Options. When you have finished specifying backup options, click OK. | |
| 8. | Click Start Backup, and then make any changes to the Backup Job Information dialog box. | |
| 9. | If you want to set advanced backup options such as data verification or hardware compressions, click Advanced. When you have finished setting advanced backup options, click OK. For more information about advanced backup options, see “To set advanced backup options.” | |
| 10. | Click Start Backup to start the backup operation. Then Start Backup again. | |
Depending on what you backup, the file size you create will vary. The files get real big fast so backup in increments and use different backup names to identify data and segregate files. If the manufacturer has to repair your computer they aren’t going to save your data. Backup in the counties is the individual’s responsibility.
