Cooperative Extension Service Departments
Communications and Marketing
The Communications and Marketing section supports the Cooperative Extension
Service’s mission through various strategies and by using various tactics and
communications tools and devices. The Communications section provides extension
in-service opportunities for county agents and specialists in the various
disciplines of communications and marketing.
Educational support
Communications specialists and assistants work with content specialists to
develop and distribute a variety of material that supports educational programs
provided to Arkansans statewide. Some of the devises used are:
Fact sheets - Communications assistants work with content
specialists to revise or develop fact sheets typically two- to six-page
publications for print and distribution, typically through County offices, and
placement on Extension’s web site.
Curriculum Guides - Communications assistants work with content
specialists to revise or develop curriculum guides provided to state and county
faculty for use in delivering educational programs.
Video tapes - Videographers work with content specialists to
develop educational video tapes and public service announcements that support
Extension’s educational program.
Displays - Interns in our media center design displays for use
in county educational programs and signs for use in educational field days.
News Articles - News articles are written and distributed to
newspapers statewide providing readers with information relating to agriculture,
horticulture, rural development, family consumer science and 4-H and youth
development. These are avialalble on the Arkansas Press Association’s web site
and on this web site under “news,” and are sent directly to news editors and
reporters electronically and via U.S. Mail.
Radio PSAs - Listeners of public radio receive information
relating to agriculture, horticulture, rural development, family consumer
science and 4-H and youth development through 3-minute radio spots that air on
npr affiliated stations in Arkansas.
Newspak - The communications section works with content
specialists who write articles that county agents may use in newspaper columns
or on radio programs in agriculture, rural development, family consumer science
and 4-H and youth development. These are made available through the
communications web page under news and through each content area’s web page.
PR and Marketing Support
Feature Package - Media relations/writers in communications
write and make available a weekly compilation of news articles that inform and
promote Extension programs.
Broadcast News - Media relations/writers work with content
specialists in placing timely news articles on television and radio stations
that serve the various markets in Arkansas.
Specialty Publications - Communications writes and designs, in
cooperation with content specialists, brochures and other printed material that
promotes and informs Arkansans about programs offered by the Cooperative
Extension Service at the state level, over the web and the air and through
classes or meetings at the county level.
Land & Life - The communications sections of the Extension
Service and Research and Experiment Stations produce Land and Life, a
semi-annual, four color publication that promotes and interprets Division of
Agriculture programs.
Extension Cord - This monthly is produced and distributed to Extension
Service retirees.
Training and Professional Growth - Communications specialists
provide training in several areas to county agents and specialists on methods
and techniques for promoting and marketing local county programs.
