Agriculture Special Programs - The Prevention and Management of Herbicide Resistant Weeds

1) TITLE OF FOCUS PROGRAM:

The Prevention and Management of Herbicide Resistant Weeds

2) SITUATION AND PRIORITIES:

Herbicide resistance issues are developing at an alarming rate in Arkansas Crops. Specific weed problems include: barnyardgrass resistance to rice herbicides, ryegrass resistance to wheat herbicides, glyphosate resistant Palmer amaranth (pigweed), red rice resistance to Newpath herbicide in Clearfield rice, glyphosate resistant horseweed, and potentially others.

Approximately 40 counties are impacted by this program. Potentially all counties in Arkansas are eligible.

3) GOAL(S) OF THE PROGRAM:

To develop programs and educational materials to curb the development and prevent the spread of herbicide resistant weeds in agricultural crops.

4) OBJECTIVE(S):

1) Increase the awareness of herbicide resistant weed issues affecting your area.

2) Implementation of resistance prevention recommendations.

3) Confirmation of suspected herbicide resistant weeds.

4) Implementation of resistance management strategies where resistance has been confirmed.

5) FACULTY IN CHARGE BY OBJECTIVE:

VI. OUTPUTS (for each objective):

Demonstrations: As appropriate and where needed.

In-Service Trainings: Increase basic knowledge of herbicide resistant and give updates on resistance developments across the state.

Support Materials: Herbicide resistance brochure, fact sheet and PowerPoint presentations.

Media Packets: If needed

Meeting Support: Support local meetings as needed by the county agent

VII. OUTCOMES EXPECTED (for each objective):

A 20-50% change in production practices where no resistance is documented. A 50-75% change in production practices where resistance has developed. Increase efficiency and higher yield. Reduced spread of herbicide resistant weeds.

IX. (A) SPECIALIST ROLE: To Provide Leadership in educating

growers and others on development, prevention and control of herbicide resistant weeds.

(B) AGENT ROLE: To provide direct support to clientele and liaison with specialist.

X. EVALUATION METHODS PLANNED: Number of grower visits, phone calls and programs implemented. Adoption of specific recommendations and programs.
