Agriculture Special Programs - Enhancing End of Season Cotton Management

1) TITLE OF FOCUS PROGRAM:

Enhancing End of Season Cotton Management

2) SITUATION AND PRIORITIES:

Management decisions from first flower to harvest can greatly impact profitability. An understanding of the crop condition from flowering to cutout is essential in making timely and effective decisions. Monitoring NAWF from first flower to cutout provides direct input to the status of the plant with regard to vegetative and reproductive potentials. Many crop consultants collect NAWF data from first flower to cutout. However, this data is rarely utilized in crucial management decisions.

3) GOAL(S) OF THE PROGRAM:

To develop programs and educational materials to increase the use of NAWF data in the decision making process.

4) OBJECTIVE(S):

1. Improve the utilization of NAWF data that is currently being collected.

2. Increase the number of acres that NAWF data is being collected.

3. Implement management strategies based on NAWF and retention values to improve sustainability.

4. Increase the utilization of crop termination guidelines based on heat units beyond cutout.

5) FACULTY IN CHARGE BY OBJECTIVE:

Bill Robertson – Agronomics (Varieties, PGRs, Harvest Aids)
Gus Lorenz – Insecticide Termination
Leo Espinoza – Nitrogen Fertilization (Soil and Foliar)
Phil Tacker – Irrigation Initiation and Termination
Robert Hogan – Economic Analysis (All Areas)

VI. OUTPUTS (for each objective):

Demonstrations: As appropriate and where needed as outlined in the Cotton Education Program.

Meeting Support: Support local meetings as needed by the County Agent.

Other:

A 50% to 75% change in the usage of NAWF in decision making process. A 20% in the collection of NAWF values in fields where this data is not being collected. Improve the timing and effectiveness of inputs to increase profitability of both in-season and crop termination practices.

VIII. TARGET AUDIENCE(S):

Producers, Crop Consultants, County Agents, and Associated Industry Personnel.
