The meeting began at 1:30 p.m. in Classrooms 1 & 2 of the Little Rock State Extension Office.

 Dr. Lyles announced that the October 11 th Admin Cabinet Meeting is cancelled. The next meeting will be held on November 8.

Welcome to Sharon Reynolds and Mike Daniels on the occasion of their first official Admin Cabinet Meeting. Sharon is the Associate District Director for Ozark District. Mike is serving as Associate Section Leader for Environmental & Natural Resources.

Agenda Items

Website Changes : Bob Reynolds with the assistance of Nina Boston presented a Power Point presentation to show upcoming changes to our website which will be implemented in January 2005. The front page of the website will have buttons and the images change as the mouse is moved over the buttons without clicking showing what is located in each category. The following have been added: Public Issues, Contact Us, Giving, and In The News. Public Issues will be the first to roll out between now and November 2 because of the need to get information out before the upcoming election. Horticulture will be next by January and will include at least two stories per month. Following will be Food Safety and Nutrition, 4-H, and Agriculture. Communications and the Web Associates will work closely with specialists for their input on the information to be included in each category. The “In The News” section will include the weekly new stories and will coincide with television, radio and newspaper media. Each news article will include corresponding fact sheets, photos, audio, Power Point presentations, etc. There is also an area where Hot Topics or Alerts can be included.

2005 In-Service Training: Joe Waldrum reminded the group of the deadline dates for in-service training for calendar year 2005:

October 1 – November 15, 2004 – All Extension Wide In-Service Training Opportunities Dates/Locations Established

November 15, 2004 – All In-Service Training Submitted and Approved

ANR Core Competency Training is going very well. FCS will begin their Core Competency Training on-line by the quarter. Also working on offering Core Competency Training for support groups in the future.

Educator Software: Joe Waldrum discussed the new software purchased to develop on-line educational courses. Educator was chosen over Blackboard mostly because of the cost (over $30,000 per year for Blackboard, $16,000 for Educator). In addition to costing less, the people from Educator have been very helpful and accessible. Three Extension specialists have received training and are assigned as Administrators for the software. They are Hunter Hauk for ANR, Sherry Roe for other program areas, and Yvonne McCool. The role of the administrators is not to be trainers or course designers but to be a contact person to answer technical questions and a go-between with the software company. Thirteen specialists have been chosen to be trained September 13-14. They will be expected to develop an on-line course and have it up and running in one year. After the first round, training will be available for as many specialists as who want to. Educator also has an on-line course for training. Contact IT if interested. The goal is to train all specialists so be sure to encourage those in your unit. As an example of how much time is involved in building the courses, every hour of the course on-line takes 30-40 hours to build. Each course developed will have to have some sort of evaluation or test built into it. Sherry Roe has completed a successful course, Best Care, and has around 600 participants taking the course.

Resignation Policy Revision: Donna Rothberg explained some recent revisions to the policy for resignations in an attempt to stay more in line with the Division of Ag policies. When a non-classified employee resigns, all supervisors must accept or reject the resignation within five working days. Donna suggested that we utilize email to do this so that there will be a paper trail. After the five working days, the official forms should be submitted through the regular approval process. This is an attempt to discourage withdrawal of resignations.

Diversity Requirement: Donna Rothberg provided a handout with the following information: The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service is committed to employing a diverse workforce. Consequently, all minority candidates meeting the minimum job qualifications will be interviewed. Before scheduling interviews, email or fax a list of all candidates who have met minimum requirements to the Employment Manager (Billie Coleman) in Human Resources. The list must be submitted in writing rather than in person or by telephone. The Employment Manger will identify those candidates who must be included in the interview process. The handout included a suggested format for the email message.

Staff Chair / Section Leader Management Conference: Donna Rothberg reported that a Management Conference for Staff Chairs and Section Leaders is set for December 7-8 at the Holiday Inn Select. The conference will begin with a special breakfast for staff chairs that have been in their position for three years or less. Jeff Bell, UA System Senior Associate General Counsel, will speak on legal issues. The agenda will include general management topics such as hiring and firing, sexual harassment, conflict resolution, etc. The final agenda item will be on financial matters.

Logo Standards: Dr. Lyles discussed the new UA Division of Agriculture logo standards which were presented at the faculty conference held that morning. Dr. Lyles and Dr. Weidemann will officially present the standards at a meeting on Thursday, September 16, and they will go into effect immediately. The logo standards will be on-line and everyone will also receive a hard copy. Dr. Lyles will be the person to approve all logos on shirts, caps, posters, vehicles, etc.

Division of Ag Unit Heads Meeting on September 15-16: The meeting will kick off with a dinner on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. There is no agenda that night but it is very important that unit heads respond as to whether they will be at the dinner or not so that the appropriate number of meals can be ordered. Thursday's session will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end with lunch. Agenda items include: Strategic Plan update, logo standards, legislative requests, 3 new policies, and question-and-answer interactions.

District Conferences: District Conferences are set for November. Ouachita District – November 19; Ozark District – November 29; Delta District – November 30. Some items to be discussed are updates on legislative requests and information on three new committees that have been assigned. The three new committees are: (1) fees for services, (2) real cost of county programs, and (3) health of Extension.

Reports From Cabinet Members

David Hensley – Horticulture

•  93 undergraduates enrolled in Horticulture this semester

•  Dr. Mike Evans received official word that his higher education challenge grant from the USDA has been funded in full for $230,000.

•  Horticulture teaching/research/extension faculty co-hosted a tour by the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce. Representative Boozman was in attendance.

Dennis Gardisser / Lalit Verma – Bio & Ag Engineering

•  Phil Tacker received the ASAE 2004 Award for the Advancement of Surface Irrigation in Ottawa, Canada in June.

•  Wayne Smith received notification from LSU that interest in Multiple Inlet Rice Irrigation had been increased because of a presentation he did there earlier in the year.

•  The 2004 Arkansas Precision Agriculture Working Group Conference on Precision Agriculture & Geospatial Information Technology will be held on November 8-10 at the 4-H Center. The conference will include Remote Sensing Short Course, a two-day program with exhibits and undergraduate and graduate student poster competition.

•  The Rice Technical Working Group will hold a Rice Drying Conference Short Course on October 27 at the 4-H Center. Funding will be provided for travel expenses for county agents to attend.

•  ARK-TENN Field Day was held on August 26. Gary Huitink and Jodie Pennington coordinated a Dairy production - Hazard management field day at Center Ridge. Agents from about six central Arkansas counties indicated the program addressed some important issues.

•  Gary Huitink highlighted key harvest adjustments for producers at Valley Implement Combine / Cotton picker meeting held August 4 at McGehee.

•  Gary Huitink participated in the Southern Cotton Ginners Association Safety meetings held at various Arkansas locations during the month of August. Gary presented information on safety issues related to cotton gin press operation including falls, entanglement, eye injuries and electrical hazards.

•  BAE program going very well – good freshman class of 47 this semester

Bob Reynolds – Communications

•  Rice and Soybean Tabloids are underway

•  Since the signing of the MOA with UALR, Communications has met with professors and department chair from rhetoric and technical writing about possible partnership. It is a possibility that students will help transform technical material into material more easily read by the general public. First project we're looking at is Mike Daniels' work concerning environmental impact regarding water quality in Northeast Arkansas.

•  Land and Life will have a new look starting with the spring issue. The mailing list for this publication has diminished. Please send names and addresses of any key constituents that you would like to be added to the mailing list.

•  AETN is interested in providing video streaming on the public issues education. These will be 30-minute programs and will link to our website.

Donna Rothberg – Human Resources

•  We've received the findings of the HR Peer Review conducted in June. We were very pleased with the thoroughness of the report. I'm working on a response to the findings and recommendations.

•  The Retirement Planning Seminar for employees with UA benefits on August 31 was a great success with 30 participants and representatives from the Social Security Administration, Fidelity Investments, and TIAA-CREF. Individual counseling sessions were held for two days in conjunction with the seminar.

•  There will be a Retirement Planning Seminar for employees with Federal benefits on November 5; however, we don't yet have any additional information. Lynda Lee will notify everyone when she receives further information.

•  The Federal Employee Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Open Enrollment runs from September 1-30. Enrollments or changes made during this period will be effective September 1, 2005.

•  The HR staff is currently working with IT on imaging all active employee files. The project will take a while, but the results will be well worth the time spent.

•  We are planning a CIV presentation on October 27 with TIAA-CREF representative Dave Welker on Investment options and retirement planning. Lynda Lee will be working with District Administration and the Center Directors on this.

Lynn Russell – Family & Consumer Sciences

•  Development of FCS Core Competency Training – Southern Region : Five faculty members are serving on regional teams to develop core competency modules for the Cooperative Extension Curriculum Project (CECP). Modules are being developed in four areas: Nutrition and Food Safety, Health, Family Life/Child Development and Family Resource Management. Arkansas : The FCS Initiative Team chairs met jointly with the Associate District Directors to discuss ideas for core competency training for county faculty. Several ideas and concerns were discussed and considered. The FCS Initiative Team chairs have now developed a plan to conduct “essential” core competency training. Learning/Assessment modules are being developed by Specialists utilizing Educator and will be made available on-line for county faculty to complete. Four modules will be ready for completion no later than April 1, 2005. Agents will enroll in via the Extension In-Service Training system.

•  A tri-state (AR, LA, MS) bus tour is scheduled for October 17 th and 18 th . Sites in AR, LA, and MS will be visited to review the Delta HOPE project. Dr. Mary McPhail-Gray and Dr. Anna Mae Kobbe (Administrators from CSREES) plan to participate along with elected officials, industry representatives, and project funders. Dr. Gray and Kobbe will also be in the state on the 19 th to review other statewide programs.

•  The Marriage, Parenting and Family Life team recently participated in a statewide Parenting Education Conference sponsored by the Department of Education. Dr. Goddard delivered a presentation during a general session and he and Dr. Dennis and Traci Johnston conducted two one-hour seminars showcasing Extension resources. Katy Randal, Sherry Roe, and Lindsey Underwood developed and manned a display highlighting our Child Care Provider Training. The conference was attended by more that 650 public school principals, counselors and teachers.

•  A joint meeting with faculty from Family and Consumer Sciences and Bio and Ag Engineering has been scheduled for September 30 th in Little Rock. The purpose of this joint event is to discuss future collaborative projects in nutrition research and outreach.

•  AEHC will conduct District Presidents' Days in the three districts during October. Mike Klumpp will present “Hats Off to Leaders” and the Associate District Directors will conduct a session on "Tools For Leadership" emphasizing development of the County EHC program. Dates and locations for the meetings are: October 19 th – Clinton (Ozark District); October 21 st – Brinkley (Delta District); October 26 th – Arkadelphia (Ouachita District)

•  Arkansas will send 26 delegates to the National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN, October 3-7.

•  Laura Connerly, Dr. Rosemary Rodibaugh, and Jane Holland will support 4-H competitive events during 4-H Day at the Mid-South Fair.

Darlene Baker – 4-H Youth Development

•  4-H Tri-State Workforce Conference was held August 2-4, at the C. A. Vines 4-H Center, 135 youth and adults from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi participate.

•  Arkansas will join the 4-H Positive Youth Development research study being conducted by Tufts University in Boston

•  Contract with the Air Force to conduct two adventure camps has been renewed for 2005

•  Arkansas 4-H will participate in the Rural Youth Development Grant and receive $4,000 for professional development

•  Cynthia Martin joined the faculty as Food Service Manager at 4-H Center on August 1.

•  A 4-H Marketing Committee has been formed and is developing exciting ideas and ways to market the 4-H program. The Arkansas 4-H Advisory Council provided suggestions on marketing at their September 2 meeting.

•  4-H Day at the State Fair will be October 16

•  Original bronze sculpture for the entrance to the Donald W. Reynolds wing of the 4-H Center has arrived and is in position.

•  Four of the state 4-H Officers and three state FFA officers will be on the cover of the new Farm Bureau magazine for producers. In addition, Farm Bureau intends to feature an outstanding 4-H club in each issue.

•  Updates for the 4-H O-Rama packet and the 4-H Events packet are in process all specialists with items to submit are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

Dick Kluender – UAM Forest Resources Center

•  Forestry and Wildlife Field Day is scheduled for October 30 at Batesville

•  Worked with Quinton Hornsby on guidelines for further programs which will lead to an in-service training next spring.

Sung Lim – Plant Pathology

•  Plant Pathology has been awarded a grant fund in the amount of $5,000,000 for four years from the USDA/CSREES Competitive Grants Program for the RICE CAP proposal: “A Coordinated Research, Education and Extension Project for the Application of Genomic Discoveries to Improve Rice in the United States,” which involved more than 14 original co-PIs from eight universities and the USDA/ARS through the USA. Dr. Jim Correll is the Project Director and Dr. Rick Cartwright is coordinating the Education and Extension part of the project. This is the first time for the University of Arkansas to be the lead university for such a nationwide research, education and extension project dealing with rice or any other crop plants and it brings a very significant recognition for the department, college, division, and university. Dr. Shult is planning an official ceremony to make the formal announcement of this award in Little Rock.

Charles Whitaker – Physical Plant

•  UALR Sports Arena to be completed by February 29

•  Working on Lonoke Greenhouse

Mike French – Agriculture & Natural Resources

•  Just completed the Division of Ag Congressional Aide Tour on September 10-11. Eleven to twelve aides participated. The tour on Friday included the UAM Forestry Center, Pulaski County EFNEP, and Faulkner County Master Gardeners. The tour Saturday was an ABIP farm in Benton County and the Food Science Institute on campus. Robert Seay and Tom Troxel did an excellent job at the Jim Singleton farm on Saturday morning.

Bernadette Hinkle – Finance & Administration

•  Passed out FY04 Budget Carryover Procedure and Reports. Follows policy CESP 14-1.

Associate Directors, State Leaders, and District Directors determined what amounts would be carried over, based upon the year-end numbers. Use fund no. 14001, plus org no. for all purchases. Purchases must comply with all CES and state rules and regulations. Reports will be available on ePrint in October.

•  Director of Financial Services Search - 3 candidates are coming back for second interviews tomorrow with Dr. Lyles.

Mike Hamilton / Sharon Reynolds – Ozark District

•  The North Central Stocker Cattle Conference was held in Harrison on August 19, 2004. Approximately 130 producers attended. Excellent program.

•  Urban Stormwater project in Washington and Benton Counties, possibly about one-half million dollars coming in.

•  Positions filled in Benton and Sebastian Counties

•  Finished staff chair training on public policy education

•  Busy with county fairs

•  County Program Reviews are in full swing. Mike invited Cabinet Members to visit the counties during the reviews with him and Sharon Reynolds. Contact him for dates. The reviews are being conducted September 7 through December 15.

•  Interviewing for vacant FCS position in Faulkner County

•  Sharon, Judy Riley, and Alberta James are busy with EHC Presidents Day programs.

Quinton Hornsby / Alberta James – Ouachita District

•  Vacant positions: Union Staff Chair, Garland Ag, Polk FCS, Union Ag, Hempstead Ag, Nevada FCS, Dallas FCS, Calhoun FCS

•  Completed Civil Rights Reviews in 7 counties: Dallas, Bradley, Saline, Clark, Perry, Sevier, Union

•  Equipment list needs: 27 desktops, 12 laptops, 2 LCD's, 25 Laser printers this will put a computer on every agent and Secretary less than 5 years old, and a laptop and LCD in every county and a laser printer in every county that is less than 11 years old.

•  County fairs in progress

•  CEC Planning Committees are in progress planning new year county programs

•  Worked on Evaluation waiver request

•  Lisa Burris, Garland County, presented at MSU on the Strong Women Program

Nina Boston – Information Technology

•  Spam filtering was implemented on the network in July. Initial review indicates it is blocking 60 – 70% of spam.

•  A task force headed by Bernadette Hinkle is working on an overhaul of the publications system. Steve Hall is leading the programming effort to improve access to free and for- sale publications.

•  The Division Directory is also getting some attention. A committee brought together by Dr. Lyles is looking at ways to improve the accuracy of the Banner information represented in the directory.

•  Virus threats continue daily. IT is checking for updates several times per day and encourages everyone to update their virus protection at remote offices and at home daily.

•  Document imaging implementation continues on schedule. Human Resources is actively using the system. Yvonne McCool and Bruce Knox are implementing an automated system to port purchase orders directly from Banner into the document imaging system.

•  Broadband migration has been accomplished in 42 of the 75 counties, replacing 56k connections with 384k to 1.5Mb speeds at a fraction of the cost.

•  Fair season is upon us. Fourteen fair associations have adopted the Extension fee-based service.

•  IT and Financial Services collaborated to evaluate the cell phone contracts available to the state. AT&T wireless was selected for reasons of coverage, additional services and cost savings.

Chris Deren – Rice Research & Extension Center

•  The good weather lately has been excellent for field harvest and experiments.

•  Discussing new labs for the Center

Joe Waldrum – Organizational, Staff & Leadership Development

•  The CSREES Federal Report was submitted and the response was favorable.

•  Recently met with Dr. Shult and working to come up with five to ten performance measures across the Division to report to the Legislature.

•  AIMS Deadlines:

October 5 – FY04 Program Time, Contacts, Benchmarks and Impacts due via AIMS

October 6 – FY05 POW rolled out in AIMS; FY05 IPOW available to staff for input

•  Faculty Leadership Program applications for Class 2 are due to Allisen Penn on September 30.

Gus Lorenz – Entomology

•  The Entomology Department is currently searching for a new department head. The search committee included two Extension personnel: Jeremy Greene and Gus Lorenz. The committee selected the top four candidates. They are: Timothy Dennehy, Arizona ; Bart Drees, Texas A&M; Bob McPherson, Georgia ; and, Robert Weidenmann, Illinois . Dr. Weidenmann interviewed last week with Extension and Research. There was a particularly poor turnout at his seminar here in Little Rock. While all Extension Entomologists were present for their meeting, Tom Troxel and Tony Windham were the only section heads present at the meeting for administrators and only Tom Troxel for the seminar.

•  We recently conducted a one-day soybean IPM in-service training (August 31) with plant pathology and CSES personnel. The training was led by Gus Lorenz and Cliff Coker. The training went extremely well.

•  Currently, we are preparing for core curriculum training to be conducted in, December. Other trainings conducted this year included: 1) an Urban Pest Management led by John Hopkins with Kelly Loftin participating with 30 CEA's; 2) “first responder” training for pest management; 3) Poultry, Livestock, and Pasture Pest management led by Kelly Loftin, 30 CEA's attended.

•  Current grants and programs initiated on Dairy IPM, Tarnished Plant Bug Community Pest Management are underway this year. School IPM will kick-off this month.

•  Field work is concluding for row crop entomologists. Studies on insect control in cotton, rice, soybeans, and corn are underway.

•  Fire ant and fly control trials are being conducted by livestock and urban entomologists.

•  Kelly Loftin attended a Livestock Entomology conference in Lake Placid, NY.

•  John Hopkins will be representing Extension at the Arkansas Pest Control Assoc. meeting in Hot Springs.

•  Gus Lorenz and Jeremy Greene recently attended the International Congress of Entomology in Australia. Gus co-chaired a symposium on Cotton Pest Management.

•  Arkansas will be hosting the Mid-South Cotton Entomologists Meeting in October.

•  Entomology provided educational opportunities for 4-H youth with Hopkins conducting entomology training for 4-Hers to encourage participation in the statewide insect collection competition and the 4-H Linnaean game competition. Hopkins and Loftin also conducted the Arkansas Bug Bowl for all AR Junior and Senior 4-H Linnaean Teams where county teams participated in a quiz bowl style competition that demonstrates their knowledge of entomology. The State Championship Teams in both the Junior and Senior Divisions as well as the second and third place teams became eligible to compete for the regional championships held at the Mid-South Fair in Memphis, TN. 4-H Insect collections were also entered in the regional competition at the Mid-South Fair.

Tom Riley – Environmental & Natural Resources

•  Working with Bio & Ag Engineering on 319 grant project. Stakeholder meeting was held on August 30. Sandra Miller is assisting with writing the project and plan.

•  Busy with Nature Mapping and water quality in NW Arkansas which has been held up due to new regulations. Keeping agents informed.

•  Ballot issues and Public Policy education are hot right now. The first order for fact sheets is 37,000 copies.

Tom Troxel – Animal Science

•  The North Central Stocker Cattle Conference was held in Harrison on August 19, 2004. Approximately 130 producers attended the program. This program was organized by a committee of County Extension Agents and Animal Science Specialists. The program was an outstanding success.

•  Dr. Jodie Pennington along with a committee of County Extension Agents organized the annual ARK-Tenn Dairy Field Day. A number of dairy producers attended to hear the latest information regarding dairy production and management.

•  The Arkansas Beef Improvement Program hosted the Congressional Aides on a farm in Benton County. The farm belonging to Mr. Jim Singleton was involved with the ABIP Replacement Heifer special Project in 2000 and 2001. The Aides got the chance to see and hear about how ABIP has helped Mr. Singleton as well as other producers. The Aides also got a review of all of the ABIP educational methods.

•  Dr. Brett Barham, Assistant Professor (Breeding and Genetics) started on September 3, 2004. We are looking forward to working with Dr. Barham. He is to focus his Extension programming on beef cattle breeding and genetics.

•  Mr. Phil Wyric, Executive Director of the Livestock and Poultry Commission, requested that the Livestock and Poultry technicians be certified in Beef Quality Assurance. Tom Troxel conducted three meetings (Hope, Springdale and Melbourne) for approximately 32 technicians on BQA guidelines.

•  The enrollment forms for the 2004-2005 Arkansas Steer Feedout Program are due October 1, 2004. With the price of weaned calves being so high, Dr. Troxel is concerned about getting a large number of steers. Dr. Troxel asked the County Agents to support the Steer Feedout Program as they have in the past.

•  The dates for the Arkansas State Fair are October 8-17, 2004

•  County Fairs are in full swing.

Tony Windham – Agricultural Economics & Community Development

•  APAC passed inspection with "Highly Acceptable" rating. This was the Annual Program Review by Department of Defense.

•  APAC surpassed last year's economic development statistics for the first ten months of the current program year, with nearly 2,500 jobs created or retained so far this year.

•  The web-based bid listing system designed by Chalmers Davis has gone online and is working to everyone's satisfaction. He should have public recognition for this major accomplishment.

•  Reached agreement on a Memorandum of Understanding with Ouachita Partnership for Economic Development to host APAC's part-time satellite office in Camden serving the southern part of the state.

•  Prepared proposal to Southern Financial Partners, the foundation affiliated with Southern Development Bancorp to fund a new ADA-accessible headquarters building.

•  Next week, APAC will participate in the Minority Enterprise Development Week activities (MEDweek) at Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce.

•  APAC is still recruiting for the vacant Program Associate position.

•  Scott Stiles and Robert Hogan presented market outlook talks at the NEREC field day on 8/26.

•  Farm Management Faculty had an article published in the 8/27 Delta Farm Press.

•  Scott Stiles is speaking to the Farm Credit Mid-South loan officers at their September 14 meeting in Jonesboro.

•  Robert Hogan made a presentation entitled “Risk Management and Marketing Factors to Consider in Soybeans” at American Agricultural Economics Association annual meeting, Denver , CO .

•  Robert Hogan presented an “Overview of Biodiesel in Arkansas” at Judd Hill field day.

•  Kelly Bryant is attending the Research Center Administrator's Society summer meeting in North Dakota this week (Sept 11-15).

•  At the Annual Meeting of the of the international Community Development Society in Cleveland, Ohio this past July, Extension's VISION 2010 Program was honored to receive the Community Development Society's Outstanding Program Award for 2004. This award is granted to recognize an outstanding program that utilizes the CDS Principles of Good Practice and has a “substantial and lasting impact on the community or population it serves.”

•  In July and August, Mark Peterson taught four Asset Mapping Workshops in St. Francis County as part of the Tri-State Community Development Partnership between the Foundation for the Mid-South and the Extension Services of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Based on these workshops, Peterson will present a county asset map at a Communities of Opportunity retreat for community leaders in Forrest City on Sept. 24.

•  On August 2-3, Mark Peterson led a team that taught the new VISION 2010 Breakthrough Solutions curriculum at the Community Development Institute (CDI) at the University of Central Arkansas with the title: “Transforming Your Community into an e- Community”. Mark was part of the design team that developed CDI back in 1990.

•  Ron Rainey attended the annual meeting of the American Agricultural Economics Association held in Denver, CO held August 1-4. Ron participated in the meetings and activities of the Extension Committee, and the Committee on the Status of Blacks in Agricultural Economics (COSBAE).

•  Ron Rainey attended the 49th Annual SNA (Southern Nursery Association) Research Conference August 10-12 in Atlanta, GA and presented a paper entitled, "Information Source Preference for Arkansas Ornamental Firms".

•  Ron Rainey made two presentations at a University of Auburn Risk Management Education Workshop on August 17-18 in Opelieka, Alabama. Presentations were, "Risk Management Outlook" and "Business Planning and Marketing Strategies".

•  Ron Rainey and Jim Robbins published a report entitled, "Arkansas' Horticulture Industry: Economic Impact and Characteristics". Report is currently being printed and copies should be available by Sept. 15. Also developed a brochure for the Green Industry (sod, greenhouse, and nursery) that is a wholesale producer listing should be available by the end of September.

Kelly Bryant – Southeast Research & Extension Center

•  Dr. Bryant is attending the Research Center Administrator's Society summer meeting in North Dakota, September 11-15.

•  Rohwer Field Day in early August was a big success. Extension specialists and agents had a large role on the program.

Be sure to get technology equipment requests turned in to Dr. Lyles as soon as possible.

Searching for a new Director of Development. The position announcement will close September 16. Bernadette Hinkle, Lynn Russell, Darlene Baker, and Mike French will screen the applications. Thirteen applications have been received to date.

Several just returned from the Southern Region PLN Meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi, and Dr. Lyles commended the group. He stated that he is very proud of Arkansas CES. We had excellent representation at the meeting and our presence was known. Good work.

The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m.
