L’Anguille River Watershed Old and Abandoned Pesticide Collection and Disposal Project

Drawing of L'Anguille Watershed mapProject goal: To assist farmers and landowners in the L’Anguille Watershed (Lee, St. Francis, Cross, Woodruff, Poinsett, and Craighead Counties) with the safe collection and lawful disposal of unwanted pesticides.

This program is open to all agricultural producers and landowners free of charge. Commercial pesticide applicators and dealers do not qualify for the program.

These collections are made possible with support from the Arkansas Natural Resource Commission, the Cooperative Extension Service, and the Arkansas Farm Bureau.

Pesticides are collected by licensed hazardous waste professionals and disposed of in hazardous waste incinerators and landfills.

Producers who would like to participate need to register by filling out an inventory form available at their county Farm Bureau and county Extension offices. All information is confidential. The inventory form allows the collection personnel to know what to expect in terms of quantities, packaging, and types of pesticides.

Since last year the Abandoned Pesticide Trust Fund funded collection events in nine counties (the L’Anguille Watershed counties plus Mississippi, White, and Drew Counties). These events collected and disposed of 159,091 pounds of unwanted and unusable material.

This program is free of charge, funded by pesticide registration fees. For every pesticide registered in Arkansas a $50 fee is paid by the manufacturers to fund this program. The collection cannot accept explosives/ordnance, radioactive materials, household chemicals, petroleum products, medical wastes, fertilizers, solvents and paints.

The final waste pesticide collection and disposal for Cross County is scheduled for:

  • Date: Friday, November 9, 2007
  • Location: Gibbs Farm Granary, one mile west of Wynne on U.S. 64.
  • Time: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Inventory forms due to Farm Bureau: November 2, 2007

For more information, contact Billie Majors, Multi-County Extension Agent - Pesticide Disposal Coordinator, at 870-261-1730, or bmajors@uaex.edu.
