Family and Consumer Sciences Answers Questions For Cross County Residents

"What is Extension?" is a familiar question heard across the state. That question is being answered in Cross County thanks to programs and information provided by Cross County Extension Agent-Family and Consumer Sciences Lisa Tucker.

"When people think of Extension they often think agriculture and forget about what we do to help families. Extension is dedicated to helping the residents of Cross County improve quality of life for their families, whether that means providing assistance in the field or in the kitchen" remarks Tucker.

Forty-two percent of Cross County residents are overweight, and Cross County has among the highest rates of diabetes in the state. Extension Family and Consumer Sciences programs focus on improving the health of residents by providing information on proper nutrition, food safety, and regular physical activity.

Programs on Heart Healthy Eating and Exercise, the Food Guide Pyramid, and Healthy Weight Management help residents to not only feel better physically, but to feel better about themselves overall.

Other programs targeting areas of health concerns like cold and flu prevention and buying prescription drugs on a budget help residents in caring for themselves and their loved ones. News articles and exhibits help to increase awareness on issues that matter to people in Cross County.

By providing up-to-date, research-based information, Extension is helping to heighten awareness and increase knowledge about the things that matter to Cross County residents.
