Day Camp Brings Fun and 4-H to Kids
Most kids complain of boredom all summer. The kids of Parkin, on Wednesdays
at least, could not rightfully say there was nothing to do. Through June and
July, Wednesdays in Parkin were filled with the bustling activities of the Kid’s
Day program, spearheaded by Parkin Mayor Eda Claire Slabaugh and supported by
the Cross County Cooperative Extension Service along with various volunteers.
Held in day camp fashion, participants enjoyed 8 Wednesdays where they shared
in activities to make them stronger people and better citizens. This program was
made possible by tireless volunteers who planned and executed activities. Mayor
Slabaugh said of the volunteers who donated a combined 476 hours of time this
summer, "Their efforts have helped the kids of Parkin. We feel we must strive to
guide and communicate with our youth today to make a strong tomorrow." Mayor
Slabaugh’s vision of a better future for Parkin motivates the Kid’s Day program.
Fourteen volunteers pulled the program together with no budget but a wealth
of ideas and talents. County Extension Agent Lisa Tucker remarked, "The beauty
of this project is the collaboration of various groups in Cross County, all
dedicated to making the program a success. This project would not have happened
without the cooperation of other agencies."
Plans are in the works for an expanded Kid’s Day program next summer.
