Cotton producers grew over 43,000 acres of cotton in Crittenden County in 2001. Educational efforts included the annual Cotton Production meeting at the Delta Branch Experiment Station at Clarkedale. Producers and consultants are shown the latest research finding and recommendations from the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. Seven Integrated Pest Management (IPM) meetings are held during the growing season to keep crop consultants, industry fieldmen, and farmers alerted to current conditions in the crop.
Cotton demonstrations this year included a variety demonstration with Bill and Stewart Weaver of Edmondson. This replicated test included 20 varieties for yield response under a dryland condition. The results will be given at the 2002 annual meeting and mailed out to producers along with the Variety Performance Trial from the experiment stations. This gives producers a local look at the new varieties. Also, two cotton defoliation demonstrations with 15 treatments (Wallace Farms, Crawfordsville and Weaver Farm, Edmondson) was established to indicate the performance of various defoliates and combinations.
Cotman program aids in earlier end of season insecticide termination decisions. Through Extension educational efforts this concept is being accepted. By accumulating heat units (DD60) once the crop progressives to a given flowering stage, insect termination can be calculated rather than guessing. This has shown to save one to two insecticide applications ($8.00 to $20.00 per acre).
County Extension Staff monitors bollworm and budworm populations with pheromone traps to help cotton producers and consultants identify which pest is present. Improper identification can result in insecticide failure and crop losses.
