Latest Rice Production Technology Shown Through County
Demonstrations
Demonstrations are a integral part of the total rice program in Craighead
County. Varietal yield comparisons, reactions to disease, pesticide
effectiveness and economics, and new herbicide technology are typically the
types of demonstrations used to keep Craighead County producers abreast of
current technology and assist them in being competitive in today's farming
economy.
Three demonstrations that were established during the 2003 growing season
were disease monitoring, effect of preventive fungicide applications on yield
and grain quality, and insect control using seed treatments.
Two educational tours were held to provide producers an opportunity to
observe new technologies in a field situation. Data gathered from these
demonstrations were distributed through educational letters, local production
meetings and published in the County demonstration booklet.
In addition to evaluating varieties for disease reactions, plots allowed
producers to observe varietal performance in our local environment in side by
side comparisons. Experimental cultivars, public releases or releases from
private companies were available for observation.
Production meetings were held to keep producers informed on the latest
informational technology from researchers relating to new varieties, weed
control, and disease problems.

Impacts
- Rice Disease Monitoring plots allow producers to evaluate rice cultivars
in side by side trials according to disease reaction, growth habits and
yield.
- A demonstration evaluating the effectiveness and economic return from
preventative fungicide applications based on variety was established this
year.
- Two field tours were held involving 200 producers and industry personnel
to show the latest in rice research.
- Rice insecticide seed treatment (ICON) demonstrations continued to show
slight yield advantage over untreated check.
- Rice production meeting provided producers information on the latest
research in disease problems, variety selection, and weed control.
