4-H Youth Development Program of Extension Service
Since the inception of 4-H early in the 20th century, youth participating in
community 4-H clubs have selected the projects or subject areas they will pursue
through hands-on learning by doing. Today, Personal Development, Health and
Safety, Plants and Computers are the top project areas chosen by Craighead
County 4-H Youth.
Beginning in 1973, the 4-H program has emphasized that along with subject
matter education, youth should acquire "life skills" - highly transferable
knowledge, skills and abilities, and useful throughout life. Youth acquire
theses life skills through community service, project work, talks and
demonstrations and record keeping.
4-H members participate in camp at the CA Vines Arkansas 4-H Center. A wide
variety of camps are available. These include: technology, wildlife, nutrition,
hiking, canoeing and much more.
4-H clubs depend on volunteer leaders to conduct the program. Leaders in
Craighead County are now participating in 4-H Core Competency training. This
training should help them to better prepare to work with their club members.
4-H has a place for all youth to excell in the area they enjoy most. Funding
for the Craighead County 4-H is received from United Way.
