Community Development

Yell County Extension Service offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of residents in the area of Community and Economic Development. Our mission is to strengthen Arkansas communities, regions and businesses through research-based education.  To accomplish this, we teach youth and adult entrepreneurs how to take advantage of untapped market opportunities and enhance their competitive edge based on the latest research findings and technology.  We help communities and regions build local capacity to improve social and economic well-being and sustainability.  We help identify and train active and effective youth and adult leaders for community, county and statewide leadership roles and to strengthen existing boards and organizations.  We provide timely, credible, unbiased and research-based information and education about public issues and increase citizen engagement.  Visit our state community and economic development page to see a description of programs available.

Family & Consumer Science

Yell Co ranks 42 out of the 75 counties in Arkansas in overall health.  Many unhealthy lifestyle practices exist, including obesity, physical inactivity, and smoking.  Multiple educational approaches were used to respond to these county issues. Multi-sessions of balance and stretching programs were conducted with our younger age groups in preschool. Multi-session
lessons to improve child care were offered to child care providers. A day long event for high school senior on preparation for real life was
conducted.  Summer program on healthier lifestyles were conducted
with 4-H youth.

4-H & Youth Development

The Yell County 4-H conducts the public speaking program Speak Up Speak Out with students in the 7th and 8th grade. These students are taught how to research a subject, the parts of a speech, and how to conduct a speech correctly. Area schools and 4-H work together to bring this program to the students each year. Teachers are trained on the curriculum and how to conduct a competition in each school to select the schools representatives. These school representatives come together for a county wide competition. Individual's abilities are recognized along with the group effects of the school team.
