Parenting Journey Map Helps Parents Find Their Way

Clay County "A Parenting Journey" Class

When parents lose their direction along the parenting journey, where can they go for help to make the journey more successful? Their children’s schools can be a source of good parenting information. This past summer 180 public school teachers, principals, counselors, and parent-center coordinators were trained to use “A Parenting Journey” materials with their students’ parents. “A Parenting Journey” is a parental-involvement in-service presented by the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. (The Arkansas Department of Education requires educators to have two hours of parental-involvement in-service training, and school administrators are required to have three hours’ training.)

“A Parenting Journey” consists of a colorful, accordion-folded map of six communities: Wellness, Loveland, Insight, Character Heights, Discovery Point, and Reunion Springs. In each community parents are invited to stop and consider several points of interest that will help them develop the essential characteristics of effective parents. Travel guides for each community go more in depth, using checkpoints for parents to mark their progress in the journey. The guides encourage parents to develop a written plan that addresses a concern with one of their children. Fun, colorful stickers help parents and children track progress on their journey.

Impacts

Parents learn to turn specific parenting challenges into family growth with the parent guide. The parent guide is one piece of the “A Parenting Journey” materials that leads parents step-by-step through a problem-solving process.

The parenting-journey map, travel guides, stickers, and parent guide are all available free-of-charge to schools, parents, grandparents, or anyone wanting to learn effective parenting principles.

Contact the Clay County Extension office at 870-598-2246 to request your free “A Parenting Journey” materials packet.
