There over 1.4 million tax-exempt organizations in the United States according to the Center for Charitable Statistics. There are over 23,000 nonprofits registered in Arkansas. About two thirds of those organizations are public charities. Public charity nonprofits are the legal entities that provide services and programs to the activities that many of us are involved. Some nonprofits are run by paid staff but, most are run by volunteers and many of those volunteers have not been trained in the various aspects of serving on boards.
The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service works with nonprofits from initial formation to restructuring after many years of existence. We also provide training to help nonprofits become more effective.
