Boone County Master Gardeners
Project Spotlight
Boone County Hospice Memorial Garden
The Hospice Memorial Garden was designed by 3 Master Gardeners: Terry
Edwards, Karen Lair and myself. Karen drew up the plans and suggested using
‘Knockout’ roses. We planted 6 of them and they are doing very well in the
garden. Terry suggested ‘Tradescant’, a David Austin Rose, which is doing very
well in our garden also.
My suggestion was New Dawn and Zephirine Drouhin, 2 antique roses which are
climbing up the poles in the middle of our garden.
In addition to the roses, we planted 10 lilies, 2 column junipers, and 6
clematis. Any of these plants may be designated in memory of loved ones for a
donation to Hospice of the Hills.
The garden is less than 2 months old now, and is just beginning to show some
flowers.
The Hospice Memorial Garden has a 3 fold purpose:
To honor the memory of some loved ones who have passed away
To beautify the area
To raise funds for Hospice of the Hills.
Hospital employees helped to prepare the soil, and installed the 3 poles for
us. Master Gardeners and Hospice volunteers planted the garden on April 2nd, and
Hospice volunteers have been watering and weeding it since then.
The garden is also doing well as a fund raiser.
