Benton County 4-H School Programs Enrich the Lives of Youth
It is normal for all of us to feel anger; however, what we do with that anger
can make a difference in the safety of ourselves and others. Benton County
4-H offers teachers and counselors help in teaching children about conflict
resolution. "Talking with TJ" is a Cooperative Extension violence prevention
program which helps kids learn to manage their anger, understand other points of
view, and communicate effectively instead of letting arguments get out of
control.
Teachers are grateful for these programs. One teacher said, "What a great
message! We assume children know these skills, but we are greatly mistaken.
Thanks for teaching these skills." Another teacher added, "The students really
enjoyed the program and could not wait for it to begin each day. I thought it
taught them the practical ways to solve their disputes with others. We will be
able to use the power phrases after the program to remind them how to handle
their problems."
To the students and teachers involved in these school enrichment programs,
4-H now means more than just another club. The "Talking with TJ"
program along with other school programs requested by teachers, are just another
way to show the community that 4-H teaches young people "life skills". Because
of this, Benton County has more kids and parents interested in finding out how
they can become involved in this great organization called 4-H.

Power Phrase: Stay Cool is the way we choose, when we fight,
we all lose.
