County Impact Statements - Ashley County
Rice and Soybeans Important Crops in Ashley County

Approximately 18,000 acres of rice and 50,000 acres of soybeans were planted in Ashley County in 2001, with a total gross income of over $14 million. With current low prices, producers are constantly searching for the most efficient methods of growing these crops. One of these new methods of production is multiple inlet rice irrigation.

"We were able to water up and maintain the flood in our rice fields about twice as fast at about half the cost using the multiple inlet rice program". Larry Holland, rice producer.

Efficient use of insecticides and fungicides based on recommended scouting procedures for stinkbugs and diseases provided producers with an economical means to control these pests.
