County Impact Statements - Ashley County
Ashley County Livestock and Forages

There were ten educational type meetings and activities for the livestock producers and 1 dual purpose for livestock and the oat/wheat producers.

There were approximately 201 individuals attending these various programs to meet the needs of the livestock and grain producer.

Subjects for some of these educational meetings were: EIA in Horses, New Forage Developments, Crabgrass as a Choice for Forage, Weed I.D. and Control and Thin Stand Oat Study.

A 4-H leaders meeting produced a discussion on law changes for checking papers for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) in horses. All of the 4-H horse club leaders and parents wanted to be certified since the changes were soon to become law. The question was, what would be the role of Extension in getting county residents certified to check coggins papers?

Ashley County scheduled a countywide meeting for the training. In preparation we announced thru local radio stations and local newspapers the training session and agenda, which generated much public reaction. Approximately 105 individuals were certified and well informed on the procedures to use. Our office staff produced EIA educational materials which were used in the form of a program and agenda for the training session. Due to the large response, our local school district provided their facilities and refreshments for the training.

Dr. Robert Harbison, Arkansas Livestock & Poultry Commission was quoted as saying, Ashley County had the largest attendance and the best organized training session in the state.
