Seventeen New Master Gardeners Trained
One of the most visible U of A programs in Arkansas County is the Arkansas
County Master Gardeners. The Master Gardeners are a group of volunteers that
performed 1,655 hours in 2004 in county beautification projects.
In order to become a Master Gardener, one must attend a forty-hour training
session. The Extension Service conducts this training every two years in
Arkansas County. Training is conducted in five eight- hour sessions and includes
education in all areas of horticulture, including ornamentals, basic botany,
vegetable production, home fruit production and lawns. A training program was
conducted
in June 2004 at Phillips Community College, Stuttgart. Seventeen persons were
certified as new Master Gardeners who will now volunteer 40 hours of service to
Arkansas County community projects each year.
Since the Master Gardeners' program began in Arkansas County nine years ago,
127 adults have completed the training and have volunteered 7991 hours of work.
Evidence of their hard work can be seen throughout the county in the various
projects they have established and maintain for the community's enjoyment.
