Extension Homemaker Clubs Provide Leadership to Communities and Perform Service Projects

The Cooperative Extension Service provides leadership to 10 Extension Homemaker Clubs with 98 members throughout the county.

Clubs meet monthly with the purpose of empowering individuals and families to improve their quality of life through continuing education, leadership development and community service.

Educational topics for the year were in the following areas:

Health - The Dash Diet; Healthy Ways to Snack; Healthy Weight, Eating Well Living Well; Make Ahead Dishes for the Holidays; What to Do in Case of an Accident.

Family Health and Relationships - Depression Management for Older Adults; Driving Decisions in Later Life; Actions Speak Louder than Words.

Members also made teaching dolls for use by Children’s Hospital, Bibs and Support Pillows for the children at Easter Seals, and Book Bags for the Head Start Children.

They provided many volunteers for the Arkansas County Fair and assisted with judging at other county fairs. At a county-wide workshop members assembled quilts for soldiers in cooperation with the DeWitt High School East Lab Project.

Clubs assisted with preparing and serving the meal at the annual 4-H Achievement Banquet, and conducting the Miss Arkansas County Rice Contest.

A new club was organized this year for the support of individuals who are or care for diabetics. This was formed as a result of the Diabetic Cooking School conducted by The Arkansas County Extension Service.
