Net Pen Manager

Duties:

A Net pen manager is responsible for day to day operations of a sea-going fish farm. Net Pens can be as simple as floating walk-ways with bowl-shaped nets to this high-tech submersible net pen shown here. Net pen managers are responsible for moving fish and feed from shore-based operations to the net pens. They maintain the pens and feed the fish in the pens. A large responsibility of net pen managers is to keep marine predators from interfereing with production. For example, seals can chew through net pens and eat the salmon produced in these offshore facilities.

Education & Experience:

A net pen manager will probably have a Bachelor of Science degree. In addition, the net pen manager must be comfortable with the operation of small boats and comfortable working at sea. A mechanical aptitude is also a good quality for a net pen manager, since they are often required to make repairs with whatever materials are available at the net pen. Resourcefullness and independence are important qualities for net pen managers.
