Humboldt State University
Hatchery Technician

I am hatchery technician for the Humboldt State
University fish hatchery. We grow many species of rainbow trout, (Oncorhynchus sp.) such as (O.clarki), (O.mykiss), both anadromous and non-anadromous species. I would encourage younger students to pursue
careers in the environmental and fisheries sciences, as the resources we all share today will further come under pressure in the future.

Each and every one of us must do all we can for the survival of the genetic diversity that we currently are aware of. We as a species must not allow the further decline of genetic diversity through our actions or inaction. Through furthering education in the sciences coupled with real world experience, we can make the tide of human caused extinctions cease.

Ironically, I do not believe that hatcheries and aquaculture are a panacea for our failing environment. However, the question remains for our generations...How do we undo that which our preceding generations have done? So, I simply encourage anyone who has vision to do their best.

I will soon obtain my B.S. and have worked for 1.5 years at my current position. My pay is $7.50/hr.
