ROY A. STEIN

Great Lakes Fishery Commission - Commissioner

Dr. Stein is well known for his scientific research accomplishments, where his work in community ecology has explored how major ecological processes, such as competition, predation, and keystone species, structure communities in ecosystems as diverse as midwestern reservoirs, north-temperate inland lakes, and the Great Lakes, and, in turn, how these findings can be used to manage these ecosystems. After serving as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Stein joined the Department of Zoology (now Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology) at The Ohio State University in 1976 as an Assistant Professor, where he became Professor in 1987, and currently serves as Director of the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory.

Dr. Stein has served as Associate Editor to scientific journals, has published extensively in professional venues, has received notable awards and grants for his scientific research, and has trained a number of students, now prominent professionals active in freshwater ecology and fishery management.  He has served on research advisory panels to the National Science Foundation, the Lake Erie Protection Fund, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Undersea Research Center, the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center, and New York Sea Grant.  Since his arrival at OSU, Dr. Stein has successfully developed and maintained a strong, collaborative relationship with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, through which long-standing fish management and research problems are addressed and jointly pursued.  His work with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission began with the Board of Technical Experts, the GLFC's research-oversight committee, first as a member (1990-96), and then as chair of this committee from 1996 to 1998.
