Name: Patricia Barbash

Job Title: Fisheries Biologist - Fish Health Specialist

Employer: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

Job Description: My job entails examination of fish for viral, bacterial, parasitic and environmental diseases that affect good survival of fish at hatcheries and in the wild. This involves examination of fish while they are alive, and also looking at some fish that are dead. To find diseases, it is necessary to dissect tissues out of the fish and run tests on them at our laboratory. I also spend a lot of time advising people who are trying to restore endangered and threatened species of fish. It is very important that these people know the disease risks involved in certain activities that are involved in restoration, so that the fish don’t become diseased. This leads to policies and actual laws and regulations written to protect the natural resources.
