David Heikes
Extension Fisheries Specialist

University of Arkansas
at Pine Bluff

Cooperative Extension Program

My job is to help people who work with fish.  I think a career in Extension suits me because I have always had an interest in fish, I come from an agricultural background, and I like to help people solve problems.  I spend about half of my time traveling around Arkansas working directly with fish farmers, farm pond and ornamental pond owners and others who need technical assistance with fish related matters.

The other half of my time is spent at the Aquaculture/Fisheries Center on the UAPB campus working directly with our fisheries and aquaculture researchers.  In addition to providing direct technical assistance to the people of Arkansas, it is also my responsibility to develop educational programs for county extension agents in matters relating to fish, ponds and aquatic pest control.  I also get to work with youth through Extensions 4H fishing programs and high school aquaculture education programs.

I think the best thing about a career in Extension is that I have never had the same day twice.  Every day is a learning experience and I get paid to keep up with latest research and technological advancements and share this information with those who need it.  Extension specialists must have a basic understanding of all aspects of their subject matter (fish in my case) and strong communications skills.  Extension specialists also tend to carve out niches in areas where they are particularly strong.   Over the past few years I have had an opportunity to develop a piece of fish farming equipment that separates fish into size groups.   Other specialists might focus on water quality or fish health related issues.
