Fisheries Programmer My name is Jon Eynon and I graduated in 1995 from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a major in fisheries science. After graduation I went to work for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and then on to graduate school at Central Arkansas. I was there very briefly when I decided that traditional research was not my style. I transferred to Purdue University in Indianapolis and just completed my MS in Biology. My research was on non-point source pollution. I built a multimedia computer program using Stella Modeling Systems and then Macromedia's Director program. The program has been for sale for some time and is doing very well!! Since that time I have started up my own multimedia design company that aims at biological topics. It is amazing the amount of work that is out there in this field. I have worked on projects for volunteer stream monitoring projects, nursing departments, and presently am working on a large project for Project Learning Tree here in Indy. I though my story was a good one in that I had the feeling that when I left Central Arkansas and the traditional study method that I had made a terrible mistake and all of my undergrad studies would be for nothing. There is more to do out there with a fisheries major then just electrofishing and reading scales. Public education for me has been very rewarding and with business growing, many upcoming project will keep me on my toes and push my scientific knowledge to the limit! Fisheries science does seem to be roaring into the computer age although not into the multimedia aspect of the field. Much of it is in GIS work and intense modeling to be used within the field. I think that more work should be done to educate the general public about fisheries issues and the computer is becoming a more viable source everyday. |
