Although my degree is technical, much of my work involves policy
and communication on a variety of subjects. Language, presentation and communication
skills are critically important, perhaps more so than technical expertise. · Promotion of sustainable inland fisheries throughout the world as head of the inland fisheries group in FAO. Efforts involve integration of inland fisheries into watershed management, improvement of inland fishery statistics, promotion of ecosystem approach to development and environmental valuation. · Co-Editor FAO Aquaculture Newsletter which includes soliciting and editing articles, news items, and editorials from FAO staff on issues related to aquaculture and inland fishery development. · Project formulation, implementation and backstopping in several areas including Papua New Guinea, Chile, Venezuela, Iran, Small Island Developing States, Southern Africa, and Asia and Pacific region. Projects in Papua New Guinea, Chile, Venezuela and Southern Africa specifically dealt with exotic species. · Promotion of sustainable development and genetic principles/technologies by identification and evaluation of new technologies, creation of technical guidelines for FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries; editing and contracting Fisheries Technical Publications on selective breeding, genetic effects of fishing; writing scientific and policy papers; and participation in international forums. · Documentation and characterization of aquatic biodiversity with publications on genetic diversity, trend analysis, and database on introduced aquatic species. · Development of policies for the sustainable use and conservation of aquatic biodiversity by contributing to the creation of Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and guidelines for fishery enhancement; by participating in several FAO bodies such as the Subcommittee on Ethics in Food and Agriculture, the Ad Hoc Working Group on Biodiversity, , the Ad Hoc Working Group on Biotechnology and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Biosafety. · Establishment of international linkages in the area of aquatic biodiversity with
organizations such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, IUCN, the International
Center for Living Aquatic Resource Management and other Centers of the Consultative Group
on International Agriculture Research, the International Network for Genetics in
Aquaculture, the Network on Technology of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean, and national
