Duties: Oversee the management and display of the living fishes and invertebrate specimens of a large public aquarium, including collection, transport, quarantine, health maintenance, water quality management, exhibitory design and display. Supervise 10 Aquarist and 6 Life Support Engineers. Responsible for the day-to-day husbandry needs of freshwater and/or saltwater specimens including collecting, food prep/feeding, cleaning exhibits, working with Medical staff to diagnosis and treat diseases, water quality testing, interpretation and public education.BS Biology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 1981 MS Fisheries, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 1985 MBA Association Management, DePaul University, Chicago, IL 1993 Current salary range $45,800 - 73,200/yr I've been working in public aquariums since graduate school, 17 years ago. "For an entry-level position (Beginning salary range $17,200 - 25,800/yr; Senior Aquarist range $23,900 - 35,900/yr) we require a BS in Biology, Marine Biology, Fisheries or related field. We also require SCUBA certification plus some experience in maintaining animals in aquariums. This experience may come in the form of working at another institution, working in the pet trade in wholesale or retail, maintaining animals in a research or classroom setting, volunteer work at a zoo or aquarium, or as an advanced hobbyist."
