Aquaculture/Fisheries Center Research Highlights
Fish Health

  1. Detection of cyprinid fish viruses
    Andy Goodwin

We have developed sensitive quantitative PCR assays for several important viral pathogens of fish and have used DNA data to correctly identify 2 viruses known under incorrect names. These assays are now widely used for diagnostic, survey, and bioisecurity uses and have identified the causes of a number of previously unexplainable fish kills.

  2. Columnaris disease
    Andy Goodwin

We completed and published 2 studies that were among the first to examine the diversity of columnaris bacteria isolates and the only study to compare the efficacy of practical treatments for the disease. We identified a new and highly effective treatment that is now in widespread use in ornamental fish.

  3. Copper Toxicity
    Andy Goodwin

We have completed and publicized a study showing that expensive copper formulations (Chelated Copper) are no more effective than inexpensive copper sulfate in the treatment of fish diseases and algal blooms. The chelated forms cost 10-20 times as much as regular copper sulfate and were putting an unnecessary financial burden on farms.

  4. Catfish Aging
    Andy Goodwin

We are completing a study that for the first time examines the age and growth of populations of catfish in older commercial production ponds. This data has provided new insights into the effects of management and feeding strategies on fish growth.
