Financial Assistance - Assistantships, Student Fees, and Bills
     Financial Assistance is very important for students entering graduate school.  Below you will find the two types of Financial Aid that our Aquaculture/Fisheries Department offers for incoming graduate students.
Graduate Research Assistantships
     Research assistantships are a form of financial aid that allow students to finance their way through our M.S. program at UAPB.  They are offered for 2 1/2 years and include funds for tuition, medical insurance and living expenses.  However, students are responsible for all fees charged each semester. Students receiving assistantships are expected to work at least 20 hours per week and to be enrolled as a full-time student (6 credits/semester). Students are paid every two weeks.

For the first year, new graduate students receive an assistantship of $17,800.  This number breaks down into the following:
 

  • Tuition - $2,980/yr
  • Medical Insurance - $500/yr
  • Stipend (Living Expenses) - $14,320/yr
  • Total - $17,800
     

     For the second year graduate students receive an assistantship of $18,800 per year. This number breaks down in the following:
 

  • Tuition - $2,980/yr
  • Medical Insurance - $500/yr
  • Stipend (Living Expenses) - $15,320/yr
  • Total - $18,800

Graduate students CANNOT receive student loans because they are already receiving assistantships.  However, a scholarship from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) is available (Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Conservation Scholarship Program).

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Conservation Scholarship Program
     The purpose of the Arkansas Game and Fish Scholarship Program is to encourage young people to pursue careers in fisheries and wildlife management.  These career opportunities include jobs in wildlife law enforcement, fisheries management, wildlife management, nogame specialist, public relations positions, environmental education and interpretation, and various related fields.  Funding for the Arkansas Game and Fish Scholarship Program is made possible by sales of conservation license plates.
Activity Fees
School is not totally free, there are some small fees that are not covered by the assistantship, but can be paid for with assistantship money. Fees are paid according to the number of credit hours you have and/or on a per semester basis, depending on the fee type. These fees are NOT covered by the university and must be paid by the student.

Fees for a regular spring and fall semesters include:
 

  1. Facility Fee ($12.25/credit hour) – for use of UAPB facilities such as power, water, etc.
     
  2. Athletic Fee ($14.25/credit hour) – to cover free admission to athletic events on campus.
     
  3. Technology Fee ($7.00/credit hour) – for use of technology on an off campus.
     
  4. Health Fee ($43.00/semester) – to cover health related services at the school infirmary.
     
  5. Student Activity Fee (FT student > 6 credits $45/semester) (PT student < 6 credits $22.50/semester) – to cover the costs of various activities on campus.
     
  6. Matriculation Fee ($37/one time for new students) – Cost charged to new students only.
     
  7. Transit Fee ($1.50/credit hour)

 

Fees for summer sessions include:
 

  1. Facility Fee ($11.75/credit hour)
     
  2. Athletic Fee ($14.25/credit hour)
     
  3. Technology Fee ($6.25/credit hour)
     
  4. Health Fee ($13.75/summer session)
     
  5. Student Activity Fee ($6.25/summer session)
Bills
You will receive periodic bills from the university for fees & tuition. Bills can be paid in one of two ways.
 
  1. Payroll deduction. Graduate students receive checks for their assistantship money every two weeks (15th and last day of every month). When signing up for classes you will have the option of filling out a form for payroll deduction. If you choose to do this, all fees and tuition will automatically be taken out of your check. The correct amount each month will be removed so that bills are paid in full by the end of the semester. All bills must be paid in full before you can register for the next semester.
     
  2. Direct payment at student accounts in the administration building. Here a check can be written or credit card given for the amount due for the semester. Just make sure bills are paid before the next semester or you will not be able to register. Late fees will apply if you do not register on time.
     

If you decide on method one, you may still receive periodic bills from the university through the mail. Ignore these bills since they are removing money in increments from your paycheck. The situation should be a zero balance at the end of the semester. Sometimes there are a few dollars or even pennies left when the next registration comes around, but a secretary will let you know when you sign up for classes. If this happens, simply go to the administration building and pay the balance.
