Family and Consumer Science Supports Ways to Strengthen Families
The pro-social, conflict resolution programs began as a need addressed by the
County Extension Council. They felt our youth were lacking in pro-social
behavior due to busier family schedules, both parents working outside the home,
and single parent families. This problem was assessed to be the communities
responsibility to help families in developing these skills in our youth and
assist parents.
Three area schools participated with one school continuing as the target
school. Through these programs children learn how to handle anger, work out
conflicts, learn to listen, not be a bully and overcome prejudices. Character
issues were presented on sharing, responsibility, caring, fairness, citizenship,
respect and trust. These programs reached over 384 youth and parents received
newsletters. Parents were also offered assertive parenting classes. The
teachers, counselors, principals and parents enjoyed the programs and felt they
had resulted in an improved learning environment and better relationships.
