Forest land accounts for 427,000 acres, or 70 percent of the land area in
Yell County, Arkansas. The breakdown of forest ownership in the county is
approximately:
- 50 percent (214,000 acres) National Forests
- 29 percent (122,000 acres) individually owned
- 13 percent (56,000 acres) owned by industrial forest companies
- 7 percent (30,000 acres) is state and federally owned
- 1 percent (5,000 acres) held by private corporations
The major forest types in Yell County include the loblolly/shortleaf pine
(244,000 acres), oak/pine (102,000 acres) oak/gum (43,000 acres), oak/hickory
(21,000 acres) and the remaining acreage includes mixed stands of oak, elm, ash,
cottonwood and other species.
Forest products contribute greatly to the local economy through recreational
use, timber sales, and forest industry employment.
