Selecting the Right Variety Extension Has Several Tools Available
Choosing the right variety to plant on the farm is sometimes challenging.
This is especially true for the Arkansas soybean producer who has more than 150
soybean varieties available. How does a soybean producer choose the right
variety? The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service has several
tools the grower can utilize in helping him make the selection.
For the soybean producer, each year the Cooperative Extension Service
publishes a Soybean Variety Update that list the performance of over 150
varieties under Arkansas conditions. The Cooperative Extension Service also has
a computerized selection tool called SOYVA available to computer savvy farmers.
Both have information on how varieties yield and react to diseases, nematodes
and herbicide sensitivity.
Many County Extension Services also have their own soybean variety
demonstrations. These are conducted with cooperating farmers and are treated
just like the farmer treats the rest of the crop. This gives the local growers a
chance to see how some varieties perform in the local environment.
In FY 2001 the Woodruff County Extension Service had soybean, cotton, rice,
corn, and wheat variety demonstrations.
