Intensive Rice Workshop Three Counties Team Up To Educate Rice
Producers
The Woodruff, Monroe, and Prairie County Extension Services teamed up in 2001
to offer an Intensive Rice Workshop to the rice producers of those counties. The
goal of the workshop was to increase the rice farmer’s knowledge of the optimum
use of fertilizers and irrigation for that crop. Fertilizers and irrigation are
significant costs to the rice farmer and optimum use of both would benefit rice
growers in this time of low commodity prices.
Ninety-eight rice farmers attended the training held on January 24, 2001 in
Brinkley, AR Of those attending 93% reported that they plan to adopt or utilize
the information they received at the workshop. 88% of those attending reported
that they significantly increased their knowledge of fertilizer management. 23%
reported they would adopt new production practices related to zinc fertilizer
management. 14% reported they would adopt new nitrogen management practice.
Multiple Inlet irrigation is a relative new water management practice in rice
production that will conserve water usage, improve distribution and management
and reduce irrigation labor. 71 % of the participants reported that they would
use Multiple Inlet irrigation. 28% of the participants said they would increase
their use of Multiple Inlet irrigation.

Current rice research from tests like this one was presented at
