White County Families
Consumer Questions
Career in Family and Consumer Sciences in Extension

What do we do

  • Professional educators whose educational efforts extend beyond classrooms and laboratories
  • We are part of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture
  • U of A is the land grant college in AR established with the Morrill Act of 1862, signed by President Lincoln. It granted public lands to the states, which they in turn sold, using the proceeds to create colleges for practical education in Agriculture and Mechanical Arts.
  • We teach. Our students are not only traditional students, but the people of Arkansas. Our lessons are as varied as our purpose is singular.
  •  We bring to farmers seeds genetically engineered in our laboratories and tested in our research fields for better yields and greater nutritional value.
  • We bring information on reducing dependency on pesticides.
  • We test soil and assist farmers in analyzing the most efficient mixture and distribution of natural and manmade fertilizers.
  • We develop and teach methods for increasing the productivity of beef, swine and poultry.
  • We teach community leaders economic and growth strategies
  • We help rural communities revitalize their town.
  •  We teach safe food handling to food managers and families.
  • We help families manage their financial resources.
  • We teach good nutrition practices to the public
  • We work with the state’s young people to help them maximize their potential.

When do we teach?

  • We do not punch a time clock.
  • Although our office hours in White County are Monday - Friday, from 8-4:30, our classes and educational efforts are not limited to those hours.
  • You will find us holding seminars and classes when and where people are available. We customize our schedules to meet the needs of White County residents.

Where do you find us?

  • Our classrooms are not limited to bricks and mortar.
  • We can be found in open fields with the good earth at our feet and the sky overhead.
  • On the tailgate of a pickup truck.
  • Each office serves as the local headquarters for the 4-H program, one of the most successful youth development programs in the world.
  • There are offices in all 75 counties in Arkansas

You will find us . . .

  • among the 8 million acres of rice, soybeans, cotton, hay, wheat, corn, oats, grain sorghum, tomatoes and peas.
