Growing Kids in 4-H - A 4-H Gardening Project
The White County 4-H Foundation purchased seeds and transplants for the 48
participants to grow as a part of the gardening project. The youth were taught
soil sampling, irrigation methods, insect and disease monitoring techniques.
They were encouraged to participate in the food preservation workshop held in
July. This workshop taught the youth how to can foods so that they could enjoy
their gardening efforts year round. They were encouraged to participate in the
annual garden fair held in August.
Since our county fair comes late in the growing season, this 4-H garden fair
allows our youth an opportunity to exhibit their vegetables, herbs, flowers,
against each other. The seeds and transplants were all bought and given out at
the same time, the playing field is level for friendly competition.
We also have a "Creative Basket" category that invites the 4-H'ers to use
their creativity and imagination to succeed. White County Master Gardeners
sponsor the garden fair and assist in preparing the 4-H members for O-Rama
competition.
