County Impact Statements - White County
4-H’ers Helping 4-H’ers
Childhood Obesity is in the headlines of newspapers everyday and is a problem
in our society. Leadership skills and teen self confidence are problems that
American’s deal with everyday. To combat these two problems, White County Teen
Leaders conducted a Cloverbud Workshop on the Food Guide Pyramid. Teen Leaders,
a county wide club, is open to 4-H members ages 12-19. This club provides
fellowship, community service, and leadership opportunities above the normal
community 4-H club. Cloverbud is the classification of 4-H'ers ages 5-8 years
old.
The Cloverbud workshop was designed to help the Teen Leaders in White County
strenghen their public speaking, leadership skills and self confidence, as well
as teaching the younger members about nutritious food choices. The workshop
involved both the Teen Leaders and the Cloverbuds from across the county. The
Teen Leaders spent several hours studying the Cooperative Extensions Service
curriculum of Professor Popcorn. This curriculum teaches about the Food Guide
Pyramid. The Teens then used the curriculum to teach Cloverbuds about the Food
Guide Pyramid.
Each Teen Leader taught one of the 7 sections of the Food Guide Pyramid. Each
lesson included the basic information about the section, a game or activity, and
several snack ideas. At the end of the workshop, the Cloverbuds had a workbook
full of information, coloring sheets, and information for their parents, all
dealing with the topic of the day, "The Food Guide Pyramid".

Cloverbud Workshop held April 12, 2003. Eighteen White County
4-H’ers participated.
