Master Gardeners in Washington County got a chance to really make a difference in the lives of over one hundred residents of Hillcrest Towers, federally subsidized apartments for senior citizens in Fayetteville this summer. Flower boxes containing pink, purple and white petunias set off by the chartreuse foliage of sweet potato vines were planted in May by the America In Bloom Committee. This committee, which is made up largely of Master Gardeners, has met monthly over the past 4 years planning for the annual national and international competitions. Their efforts have paid off. Fayetteville won their national population category in 2002 and 2004 and received 5 Blooms (the highest awarded) in international competition in 2003. This year’s international awards will be presented in September in Canada.
The Tower of Flowers has raised community wide interest both for it’s prominent location as well as for the benefits it provides to the residents of the towers. Residents have taken pride of ownership in the boxes, many of them helping with the original planting and now assisting with the watering. Some have even added additional container gardens to their balconies.
