Extension Homemakers are Building Strong Communities by Building
Strong Families
Teen mothers are at the highest risk for not completing high school and thus
limiting their success in life. In response to this growing need, Extension
Homemakers developed monthly programs at the Fayetteville West Campus Parenting
Center for teen parents. The Extension Homemakers and Family and Consumer
Science Agents have taught classes on foods, nutrition, budgeting, financial
management, and life skills. With this training, one of the teen parents was
able to raise her son, graduate from High School and College. She said she could
not have done it without this help.
Over 400 Extension Homemakers in twenty-five community clubs throughout
Washington County give of themselves to help others. Their three goals are:
community service, education, and leadership development. Through the Master’s
programs over 150 Master Volunteers have taught over 5,000 hours of research
based Extension education information to others. Through this desire to help
others, they have shared their knowledge and gave their best. They just
completed making 500 Christmas Stockings for the Children’s Hospital.
Washington County Extension Homemakers conduct monthly community service
projects for: VA Veteran’s Hospital; AR Children’s Hospital; Teen Parenting
Center; Homeless Students; Schmieding Center; Free Health Clinic; Women’s Abuse
Shelter; plus other Community Projects.
