Dealing With Diabetes Made Easier With the Right Bite

A diagnosis of diabetes can be extremely frightening. Learning all that needs to be learned to maintain a healthy and happy life can be an intimidating task. The job may have been made a little easier for those attending the Dealing With Diabetes sessions last July in Stone County. Session one included a discussion of "You and Your Medications" by a local pharmacist. A Registered Nurse then covered the topic "Diabetes- What You Need To Know From Head To Toe". The third guest speaker offered participants encouragement and her own personal motivational tips for "Dealing With Diabetes". The day’s final topic, "Eating Well- Guidelines For Diabetes" was addressed by the County Extension agent-Family and Consumer Science.

Additional sessions on "Meal Planning", "Modifying Recipes To Lower Fat And Sugar", and "What’s New With Artificial Sweeteners" were offered during the month. Participants learned about new products, discussed cooking methods, sampled recipes, and shared ideas. They also learned to develop a personalized eating plan using the Exchange System and the Food Guide Pyramid for people with diabetes. Sixty-one people attended one or more of the Dealing With Diabetes sessions. Eleven people learned how to use the special food guide pyramid and Exchange System to plan their meals. Post-program evaluations were positive. Additional classes on meal planning have been requested by clients who were unable to attend this year’s sessions, so more will be offered during the coming year.
