Reshape Yourself A Success

Graduates of the Reshape Yourself program continue to report good results. Twenty-five people enrolled in the nutrition and exercise program last February. The group first learned the current recommendations for healthy eating and exercise. They then started adapting these guidelines to fit their own lifestyles. They learned how to plan healthy meals, how to read food labels, and how to adapt recipes to cut calories and fat without sacrificing flavor. When it came to exercise, variety was the key. Most participants chose walking as their primary exercise, but the group added optional sessions on stretching, low-impact aerobics, and strength training with hand weights. Several started their own small "satellite" walking groups, recruiting family members, friends, neighbors, and even pets! Along the way, the group shared recipes, cooking tips, product recommendations, and ideas for staying motivated to exercise.

Sixteen participants completed the fifteen-week program and graduated. Nine of the graduates met their exercise (at least four times per week) and weight loss (10-20 pounds) goals. Eight of the graduates were able to document significant before-and-after reductions in blood pressure. One person was able to halve his blood pressure medication and another was able to reduce his doctor visits from once per month to once every three months. Perhaps best of all, the graduates are still walking and staying active. Several are strength training. Reshape Yourself will be offered again this winter, with special emphasis on strength training, walking, and other exercise. Most of last year’s participants plan to be involved; when last year’s program ended, they just kept going!

Impacts

  • Last year’s 16 Reshape Yourself graduates reported an average weight loss of 11 pounds per person.

  • Reshape Yourself graduates walked more than 1000 miles during the 14 week program. Some also bicycled, participated in aerobics, or started strength training with hand and ankle weights.

  • More than 40 people in Stone County have completed the Noonliting/Reshape Yourself programs.
