County Impact Statements - Stone County
Extension Provides Good Teaching Tools-Garden Activities and 4-H Youth

"4-H youth work is rewarded when youth become involved by setting goals and achieving them, especially in gardening activities," stated Mrs. Olivee Watters, County Extension Council Chair.

"Gardening is the most commonly listed leisure activity here in Stone County. It can also be a very good educational tool for youth and adults," according to Vivian Willis, Stone County Master Gardener."

Demonstrations gardens were prepared and planted with volunteers from the FNEP, EHC, Master Gardeners, 4-H and other people from local business, newspaper and churches. Gardening produce was used for food preservation educational activities, Food Room (NADC) and other educational activities.

Many first time home gardens were planted. This assisted in healthy and higher nutritious eating habits along with additional savings from buying fresh vegetables. Most new gardeners continue gardening after starting for the first time.
