Limited Resource Families Learn to Improve Nutritional Well-Being

Picture of pregnant woman showing how to eat a healthy diet.
Gwen Scamardo, Family Program Assistant presents a skit for Pregnant women on eating a healthy diet.

The Family Nutrition Education Program is designed to assist limited resource audiences in acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary for nutritionally sound diets, and to contribute to their personal development and the improvement of the total family diet and nutritional well-being.

Through an experiential learning process, adult program participants leaned how to make food choices to improve the nutritional quality of the meals they serve their families and better manage resources used to purchase food.

In addition to the 118 enrolled participants who received intensive education over a 12- 14 week period, the program reached 62,725 people through awareness programs, exhibits, and mass media and 249 persons through special interest programs. Enrolled participants met in small groups or one-on-one to receive educational information in a "learn by doing" atmosphere.

"I learned that you can cook hamburger meat and freeze it to use later. I also learned that you can save left over vegetables and put them in the freezer to use later for soup" - FNEP participant

"Watch sale prices, what looks like a good buy may not always be saving you money" - FNEP participant

"When shopping, check the price and the date on things" - FNEP participant
