County Impact Statements - Sebastian County
Youth "To Make the Best Better"

4-H Logo

Since the inception of 4-H early in the 20th century, youth participating in community 4-H clubs have selected the projects or subject areas they will pursue through hands-on learning by doing. Today, Personal Development, Health and Safety, and Plants and Animals are the top project areas chosen by Sebastian County 4-H Youth.

Beginning in 1973, the 4-H program has emphasized that along with subject matter education, youth should acquire "life skills" - highly transferable knowledge, skills and abilities, and useful throughout life.

County wide activities that provide opportunities for 4-H’ers to learn skills include: poultry barbecue, talks and demonstrations, annual Achievement Banquet, record book program, baitcasting and game fish identification, bicycle skills, and gun safety and BB gun marksmanship. Sebastian county youth also participate in state 4-H camp, Citizenship Washington Focus, Kansas City Global Conference, Shooting Sports, District and State Horse Shows, and High Adventure Back Packing .

Volunteers are essential to the successful delivery of 4-H programs to youth. The average volunteer spends approximately 220 hours per year volunteering with 4-H. In 2001 the estimated dollar value contributed by 4-H volunteers in Sebastian County was approximately $ 147,800.
