Extension Holds Farm Pond Meeting
Almost all rural residents have one or more ponds on their property. These
ponds are used for several different purposes. Many provide: water for
livestock, fish, water for garden irrigation, and many serve a combination of
all these and other purposes. Many people receive satisfaction on having a nice
looking pond. Nevertheless, ponds are of great interest to many residents of
Scott County.
Due to the large number of calls to the Extension Office concerning various
pond issues, the importance of ponds was made clear. Many people were having
trouble with green ponds, leaking ponds, and weedy ponds. Seeing the wide scale
interest in pond issues, a meeting was planned by the Extension Office to
educate pond owners on pond management. Special scientists who work for the
Extension Service and study ponds and fish were brought in to provide technical
expertise to the meeting that was planned in July 2001.
The meeting was held at an actual pond site so people could see first hand
how management practices within a pond are performed. Also, presentations were
given on water quality, weed control, fertilization, and pond leaking problems.
The meeting was well attended and provided pond owners with valuable information
to use in developing their own ponds into beautiful scenes for their enjoyment.
